How much do extracurriculars matter to CSUs? Do I have a chance at the top CSUs?

My GPA is 3.67 with a 1320 on the SAT. My ECs are really good, I have collected over 500 hours of volunteering and work experience. But from what I’ve heard, CSUs don’t pay attention to ECs, which sucks because that is kind of what I’m relying on to get me into UCSC.
The CSUs I’m applying to are Fullerton, SDSU, CSULB, Humboldt, and SFSU.

EC’s are not considered in CSU admission decisions. It is based on your CSU/UC GPA, Test scores, HS course rigor, and Geographical location (in-service area or not).

Cal states admit by eligibility index and major. (CSU GPA x800) + (SAT Math + EBRW)= 4256.

Your EI makes you competitive for all the Cal States on your list.

For UCSC, here is what they consider important in the application review and UCSC is possible, so best of luck.

  • Santa Cruz

  • Very important: Academic GPA, Application essay, Rigor of secondary school record, Standardized test scores, State residency
  • Important: Character/personal qualities, Extracurricular activities, First generation college student, Geographical residence, Talent/ability
  • Considered: Volunteer work, Work experience
  • Note: Test scores, GPA in required subjects most important. Personal statement very important.

I agree, the CSUs you list will almost certainly let your in. UCSC is 60/40 against. Compelling essays and ECs could tip that the other way.
good luck.
