How much do extracurriculars matter?

I plan to apply to NYU, Boston University, Amherst, Penn State, and University of Edinburgh Freshman Year Abroad Program. I can't list my extracurriculars...well...because I don't have any. I am not a video game addict though. I read books on my spare time. I am an incoming Junior, so I still have time and hope to get in 100-200 hours before I apply. So how much do they really matter?

NYU, Boston University, Amherst - you will need at least some EC’s, unless your academics are really amazing
Penn State - EC’s don’t matter much
University of Edinburgh - I don’t know about that specific program… but just applying as freshman to any UK university require 0% of EC’s. They don’t give a ****

Would 100-200 hours of basic EC’s qualify as “some”?

In the world of EC’s volunteer efforts are important, however leadership roles, and membership in clubs/teams/organizations in or out of school that show solid dedication are going to be more important. If your school has an active Model UN, Debate team, etc. these are considered to be good EC’s that require solid time commitment and dedication. If you are a right brain student, look for Science Olympiad, Intel competition, etc. Out of school you can find groups to be involved in as well. Something very defined such as a musical ensemble that actively preforms, a church youth group that is involved in a habitat program. These are just examples. Find something that fits you. You enjoy reading. Talk to your school about starting a literary club where you choose a book once a month to read and discuss. Go further and organize a book drive at your school having students donate gently used books that you can give to a local charity or your local library. This shows initiative on two levels. You would need a teacher to sponsor you, however I doubt you would have trouble finding an english teacher or your school librarian to agree.

It is not too late. Other’s may disagree, however I don’t feel stacking up more volunteer hours is going to get you the added results you are looking for. They don’t want to see resume padding, they want to know what you are interested in, what makes you tick.
