I'm doing a bit bad this semester by my standards because I'm taking a lot of hard classes (6 IBs, 1 AP out of 8 alloted classes, and the IBs include classes like IB Calculus HL 2, IB Physics, etc. Please don't think I'm showing off or anything because I know that those classes are below average for a large portion of the people applying to UVA, but I'm just trying to say that they certainly aren't fluff classes either), and thus my GPA is obviously dropping a bit because of the overload of work. I'm just wondering that when UVA looks at my grades, will they take into account that I am challenging myself, or will they just see that I have a 3.7 this semester which means I'm slacking?

I’m OOS, and that GPA is UW…I’d seriously kill myself before I let myself get that low of a weighted GPA. But that’s not my overall GPA 9-11. My 9-11 UW is 3.91 or so, and I’m like top 3% weighted, top 5 or 6% unweighted I think. I’m seriously trying my best, but do you think that if I get a couple of teachers to write a letter perhaps saying that I am trying, but I’m just taking a tough schedule that that would help?

lol no it’s in oregon. I just love Cali haha. OK fine, my bad on the specifics, but I guess I’m in IB Math HL or AP Calc BC (we combine the two).

It’s good that you’re taking IB Math HL, because it’s definitely a rigorous subject. Be sure that you do really well in it though. You haven’t mentioned any specific stats other than your 3.7 this semester. It would help if you state your SAT scores and cumulative GPA. Also, what kind of school do you go to? What is your rank?

I go to a public school…don’t have SAT scores because they’re bad, but my ACT is a 30, so it’s nothing great either unfortunately. My rank is like 17/550 or something like that weighted.

I would also like to know this. I also took a hard schedule not like the OP’s but hard.

A.P English Language and Composition
A.P Microeconomics
A.P Calculus AB
Linear Algebra and Differential Equations
A.P Chemistry
Biology Projects
Macroeconomics

Your senior grades really matter, but a slight fall from an increased workload would be understandable of the adcoms. However, a severe dip in your grades could result in a withdrawn acceptance.

what is considered a slight fall? I had 1 B all of last year with 4 and 5 IBs, albeit they were mostly SLs, and this year I think I really could end up with a 3.5 UW (my weighted would probably end up being like 4.09 or 4.1 is my guess). Is that a slight fall or a severe fall? Is there a way perhaps I could have a couple of teachers write letters because they know I’m working my a** off, it’s just that I’m not one of those really gifted kids that can deal with ECs and a ton of homework everyday you know?

A slight fall is like what collegehopeful78 posted. It’s a slight decrease like a low A to a B+. A severe fall would be going from an A to a C. You’re fine, california_love8. Admissions will see that you are taking difficult classes with that UW 3.7 or 3.5.

UVAMalex, I usually have straight A’s and I’ve had 1 B in the past (10th grade) but I think I might get 2 or 3 B’s this semester, do you think that that’s a severe drop!? I’m taking 7 AP classes this year including Physcis B (my worst subject- i have a B), AP Calc, and AP Chem as opposed to the 4 AP’s I took last year. So does the increased rigor sort of make up for the B’s?
