how much do i prep for act?

alright, everyone i have talked to says that all i need to do to get ready for the act is take a practice test to get used to the format. everyone on this website says to prep your brains out. which is it? im taking the test in a month, what do i do? i have not prepped at all; i have been prepping for the sat though. im taking this test kinda like a first timer-just see how i do. my parents paid for it so im not to worried about the money (neither are they.) should i do anything? im taking a practice test every week up to the sat, should i do the same for act? i might just retake in jan. is it worth taking now at all?

the most important question i want to ask is how do i prepare in a month?
(youll prob say i cant prep that fast, and should just hold off on testing)
is there anything to lose besides time and $$$?

thank you for you help!

For me, the best way to prepare for the ACT was by taking the ACT. The second time I took it, my score jumped significantly, which I attribute to becoming familiar with the kinds of questions asked and the types of intelligence measured. Of course, the next best thing to practice with a full length exam.

just once? did you do anything else? from what i gathered, you just took the test once, and then took it again. did you practice in between or anything? thanks namless

and buy a book

i liked kaplans

Well, I didn't do any studying on my own--just a few practice questions the night before the test. Besides the added familiarity of the second exam, the classes (not ACT prep classes, just regular school classes--algebra, english, etc.) I had in between the two tests probably helped as well. So I guess I should add that you should also pay attention in your classes in order to prepare yourself.

i was studying extensively for the SAT, but decided to take the ACT also because it really couldn't hurt. I bought the Real ACT book, which offers 3 real tests, and took the tests to get used to the format. I scored a 31, a 33, and i didnt finish the last test. On the day of the exam, i scored a 33, all of which was done with one week of studying. I think if your better at math than you are at english, the ACT will work in your favor. The science portion is mainly just logic and helps to increase ur score. if u care to see the breakdown:

31 E = 10 essay
32 R
33 S
36 M

composite = 33

It is helpful to buy a book like Kaplan's though. There were a few questions where ACT tries to trick you, different ways of looking at questions, brush ups, etc. that were really helpful to me. And the book was easy to read through.
