No... The Freshman grade counts only so far as to your class rank (and even that may depend on which high school you go to). Most HYPSM place a lot lower weight on these, that is not to mean they are not important.

Indeed, but most HS still count Freshman year in class rank and that matters a lot for top notch places. Most classes are very hierarchal thus they can see the continuations of certain classes and see how well you do in those... That is the final result.

This absolutely does not mean don't try as hard Freshman year.

I think freshman year grades really set the tone for the rest of your high school year.

If you do poorly, it will be so hard to get the GPA back up. I am speaking from experience. I took my GPA average from 3.3 up to 3.6 right now and it was hell. It took so much work and the pay off seems so little.

I got so many A's and no B's and still my GPA wouldn't budge.

I had this problem. My first semester freshman GPA is about 4 pts lower than my cumulative GPA right now (I'm a senior, and my school uses the 100 scale). Believe me, it was painful to try to raise my GPA in my junior and senior year when my freshman year grades were that low.

As for the colleges, they would notice that you tried harder in your later years so your freshman grades are probably not that much of a problem.
