One of my main stumbling blocks with considering TCNJ, is that people say its a suitcase school and people visit home a lot. What is that aspect like?

I've been wondering about that myself and have heard many contradictory accounts. I'm going to be a freshman at TCNJ in the fall and I'll definitely comment on that in the future when I learn first-hand what the really campus looks like on the weekends.

Thanks, should be interesting, because my parents want me to go there because its relatively inexpensive and has good academics. I'm worried about whether its "college experience", which is important to me

yo i go there right now, so many people leave on weekends....honestly, you go to the dining hall, and there are no lines. one time, i forgot my card to swipe in the door, so I waited for perhaps someone with a card, would be leaving the building (so i could go in), or someone with a card would swipe into the building for me. I waited for like 20 minutes, no one came because it was so deserted......

I'm currently a TCNJ student. Let me just say first that I am happy with my decision to come here. I got a great education, I love my classes and professors, and I've made some great friends. However, in my opinion, TCNJ simply does not provide that collegial atmosphere that many other schools seem to. I did a study abroad last year in England and there I felt like I really got that type of collegial atmosphere that is just missing at TCNJ. Yes, a lot of students go home on the weekend. No, there isn't a lot to do on campus. Yes, we are very isolated and are not in a college town. The majority of social stuff on the weekends comes from the off-campus frat parties, and if that isn't your thing then you don't have many options for fun on the weekend. Whatever the admissions office says, these are facts about TCNJ.

That doesn't necessarily mean that it is not worth coming here. One thing I will say is that I've noticed over my four years here that this does seem to be gradually changing, with people getting more involved, more student organizations and more people staying on campus. You mention that you were considering TCNJ to save money so it's also important to think about why you're coming here. If you intend to go to graduate or professional school after TCNJ, then it makes sense to save some money now. Good luck deciding!
