How much do SAT subject tests affect admission?

Ok i have pretty good stats, especially SAT scores (Im a national merit semi-finalist as of now and got 800 Math and 740 CR on the SAT I) and im taking SAT subject tests next weekend. Im very confident about the Math 2 test (750+) but not so much the biology one. How much would it affect my chances at Rice if i got say a 600 on the test? I mean they say either take the SAT and 2 subject tests, or the ACT with writing, so the subject tests cant matter too much can they?

Wow, 56 views and not a single reply. 56 people viewed this thread knowing EXACTLY what it would be about, and decided not to waste 3-4 seconds of their time.

The National Merit Semifinalist title will definitely help. It would be best if you got about 700 on all subject tests for Rice. GPA is a big factor as well.

It’s not that most people didn’t want to waste their time. It’s that they don’t know.

Oh ok, well im planning to major in math and never take a bio class if i dont have to, so i assume the math will be weighted more than the bio right? But say i get an 800 math and a 600 bio, will that hurt my admissions chances even thought my major will have nothing to do with bio?

yes, it will hurt you. will it kill your chances? no. will it decrease them? yes.

Hmm wow. Bummer.

Ok well i am in my third year of IB biology, and i make As and Bs in it every year, but for some reason I cant seem to get a score over 600 on a practice test. My friend from class says he made an 800 on the Biology subject test, and although he is admittedly slightly better than me in the class, its not a difference between a 500 and an 800. Why is this?

Maybe take another subject? Maybe something like lit or history?

Simply don’t take bio. On the test day, you actually choose which ones you take regardless of what you signed up for.

Maybe you’re taking tests from a prep book where the practice test is harder than it really is. I was prepping from Barron’s for Math II. I started a week before the test. Time and time again the scores I was getting from the book were between 550-600.

On the actual test, I got an 800.

It was Barrons that i was getting bad scores in! And the reason im taking bio is that some schools require a science and a math, and i would take physics, but im in my first year of it now. And while i appreciate all the help, do any of you guys have an idea of how a 600-650 in bio would affect my chances of admission?

You already got your answer: it’d be adversely affecting your admission. Ideally, if you still have time, you should take multiple subject tests to have a higher probability of scoring well on some of them (schools generally take the highest 2 or 3 scores depending on how many they require)

No way, PR is a cinch. I think it really depends on each subject.

Which bio test are you taking? There are 2 I believe.
