How much do spring 2010 grades matter for UCLA?

Does anyone know what would happen if you applied to UCLA communication studies with a 4.0, but in the spring your GPA dropped because of one or two B's.. ?

Do the spring grades affect their decision?

I believe you’d still get in, but it could jeopardize scholarships.

I’m completely bummed out because I don’t have 4 finished prerequisites by the time I apply (SOON). I only have 3 finished right now, but 2 more are in progress during this semester, and I’m planning on taking the remaining 2 in the spring.

Also, I have heard that many get rejected despite their high GPA’s so I’m super worried. I have most prereq’s for Psych and I’m really interested in that as well. I haven’t decided if I should switch or not!

SofieJ,

I wouldn’t worry too much about it. I’m pretty much in your situation (Comm Studies, 4.0 GPA) and I’m finishing up two of my pre-reqs in Winter/Spring. I talked to my counselor about it, and she said it would be fine. As we all know, it’s near impossible to get in as a Comm Studies major, even with a 4.0, so I’m just relaxed, and if I don’t get in, hopefully I get into Berkeley as a Rhetoric major.

Good luck!

I just know that it says on the UCLA admissions webpage that to be considered for admission you have to have 4 finished prerequisites by the time you apply. And since it’s so competitive to get in already, my app is gonna look bad :(

…cannot be emphasized enough, especially in this admissions climate. I am an Electrical Engineering major, and was scheduled to apply this year, but have decided to stay at my CC one more year just to ensure that I have EVERY SINGLE pre-req completed. We recently had reps from UCLA come to our campus for a “transfer conference” for science and engineering students. I had the opportunity to talk to the rep (who was actually one of the persons who was involved in the admissions selections process - HSSEAS makes its own admissions decisions), and he stated that even if you had a 4.0gpa, missing JUST ONE pre-req could put you at a SERIOUS disadvantage (he said a very good chance of a rejection), and missing 2 pre-reqs was automatic denial. Now although admissions to engineering is very competitive (significantly moreso than majors like math, physics, history etc.), it is not at the same levels as majors such as biology, biochemisty, biz-econ (and I assume some majors such as comm. studies).

i don’t think missing two pre reqs is automatic denial. If the rest of the app looks good (good EC’s, upward trend, work exp, essay,) then i think you should still have a great shot. Besides, an ad com told me that if a school does not offer a pre req, or you can not take a pre req for some reason, all you have to do is show interest in the major by completing courses similar to the pre req. It’s not the exact equivalent but it shows major interest in the field. just take a course similar to your pre req or change your major to a less impacted one that is similar. You might be able to switch majors once you are in.

I have now found out that for communication studies at UCLA: “Seven lower division courses total; at least four should be completed by the end of fall prior to transfer”.

I have 5 prerequisites finished by the end of fall (this semester) and will finish up the last 2 in the spring. I don’t think “saving 2 for spring” puts me at a disadvantage as I still fulfill the fall requirement which makes me eligible… and my GPA is perfect.

If I don’t get in to UCLA I hope I get in to Berkeley as a Media Studies major. I am so excited!

Good luck everybody!
