Just wondering what is realistic for a spring /summer engineering internship wage if anyone knows. I am just looking for round numbers not specific. Is it like $15,000 or closer to 30,00. I hear all different numbers and would be nice to have one sorta plan since most of this will be going on our tuition, if we need it to by then. Thanks in advance.
There is a really wide range depending on the job and company. You cannot really count on that as some may not even get an intern position until junior year. By the way, what is the unit of your numbers?
Sorry typing on the phone quickly is not always Ideal. I just heard different numbers and can reach out to the engineering department. We are not relying on it but would be nice to know. I am pretty confident he can get an internship both summer of sophomore and junior years. There are multiple sources for internships and not just through school.
Thx.
Again, it varies a lot. It is very hard to find one in the summer after freshmen year even with junior standing by credits.
Good to know. This will be for next year after sophomore. He is going to take classes this summer. Thx again. Check out glass door. In our area there are quite a few engineering internships that don’t require a lot of previous experience
Yes, but there are also many with some experience applying to it too. For the summer after freshman year, I would suggest to have summer UROP as a backup plan. It is almost guaranteed and you may get pay. You will also learn some technique and get to know a professor who may write a recommendation for you later on.
My daughter only made $10/hr for hers last year, but that’s because she set it up late with a family friend. It was 5 minutes from home and she really wanted the experience more than making more money. She doesn’t regret it. She also got a very late start because her team made the NCAA tournament, so she was 2 weeks later than expected. She only worked Jun 15 to Aug 15 because she had to get back to school.
A friend of hers made about $15k the year before but she went from Florida to Alaska for the summer and had to pay expenses out of her earnings.
It is going to depend on the number of months he can work, where he wants to live, if he has a car.
Good information. Summer urop deadline just passed but he wants to take calculus 3 and physics 2 this summer anyway. I have heard anywhere from $15,000-$30,000. The money is not important but just curious. Of course minus living expenses, travel etc. The experience is the most important thing
$15k-$30k in how many months? It sound like a dream job for summer intern.
Looks like a Michigan student could start May 1 and work through the end of August (so 18 weeks at outsides). 40 hours a week for 18 weeks would be about $42/hour to get to $30,000. $21/hour for $15,000. There are a lot of engineer grads who do not start at $84,000/year.
They are out there. I can’t copy the link to glassdoor but look up summer engineering internship. I know a neighbors kid that snagged one last year and made like $30,000 in the summer and why I asked.
$20k - $30k not unusual
Cool. That’s what I thought. I appreciate it.
@Knowsstuff That’s very dependent on the type of internship. Your mileage may vary…
I think your numbers are much too high for engineering internships. Figure about $20 an hour to start, less taxes. Computer science interns tend to make a lot more than engineering internships,
I think YMMV. My daughter went to Cal Poly SLO majoring in Industrial Engineering. She had three different internships starting sophomore year (took her 4.5 years to graduate). She worked at Gallo Wines, Lockheed and a company that made medical devices (can’t remember the name). At each job she made $25-$30 per hour. None of the companies paid a living, transportation or moving stipend. She worked in the Bay Area and for Gallo, in Modesto. Her boyfriend was an IT major and his internship paid only $10 per hour. I think it mainly depends on the company and what kind of engineering degree you are getting. For example, Gallo paid their chemical engineering interns quite a bit more than they paid my daughter and rightfully so. A friend of hers has interned at Apple and they pay above average, but he is a software engineering major I think. Getting paid is great, but sometimes just the experience is priceless.
And the area make a big difference too. I am not surprised to see a higher rate in Bay area. In mid west, it is more likely to be around $20 per hour
@Chumom good to hear. My son is going to major in industrial. Yeah… Google, Microsoft, Uber, Intel all are like $7-8,000/month for programmers… Nice if you can get it… Lol.
Yes I agree the experience is key but getting paid to help with college is a nice perk.
My D’s roommate intern at Microsoft and they gave each one a Surface to keep too.
Nice perk. I do have a connection at Microsoft. Might have to call in a favor 8-|
