How much do test scores really matter?

On practice tests, I've been averaging around a 2200, and I have a 4.0 at a magnet high school program. I have pretty good ECs as well, but I'm Asian. Do I really need to bring my test scores up to get into schools like Princeton, MIT, and Yale?

My guidance counselor explained it like this: if you are within the 25th-75th percentile (or higher) with regards to a school’s test scores, then you’ve succeeded when it comes to SATs and getting a higher score really won’t do you much good.

2200 is within that range.

k, cool
thanks for the reply!

Unfortunately, since you’re an overrepresented minority, I have to disagree with Randwulf. A 2200 would actually be relatively weak amongst the pool of Asian applicants for those schools. A 2300+ is really needed in order to be competitive unless you’ve got some sort of pretty big hook.

If you’re unspectacular as a student/human being, a score at or above the 75th percentile is a helpful asset.

do you have amazing legacies or ECs? i would say, if not, then retake the test to get 2300+

Really, people? You’re fine, dude. relax. These people are all crazy.

They matter a lot. Really.

2200 probably won’t cut it for an Asian applicant to top ten schools, unless you have something amazing going for you.

people on this board are exaggerating so much its rediculous.

Hm…I don’t really have that big of a hook or an outstanding hook, so I guess I do need to raise my scores a little… I play tennis and can get ranked in the top 50 of the midatlantic section for Boys 18 and under if I tried, would that be good enough to have a good hook or get recruited?

I agree w/ Magic123. i mean, I dont know for sure how much weight test scores have but Colleges are prbly looking to see that youre well-rounded more than anything.

You must have some major major major ECs and atleast a 2300 if you are asian

Dont pay attention to the above post. People are ridiculous.

You are fine. The people on this board are conformist ■■■■■■■ who have no idea what they are talking about. Apply wherever you want, write a great essay, and you will be fine. If you dont get into a top ten, so be it. It’s not like its going to make your life all that better.

chill out man
i noe a guy from our school
SAT combined score was 2200, asian
made Wharton ED…SAT is not taht important
once your 2200+ u shud do more with your life

A 2200+ will be fine for top colleges. Of course, a higher score is always better, but after 2200, there isn’t as much of a need to obtain a higher score.

this is ridiculous. I know a Korean kid who got a 2100 and was accepted to Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Brown, and Upenn Whartan. No hook. you’r fine.

cool guys, thanks for posting :)

“I know a Korean kid who got a 2100 and was accepted to Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Brown, and Upenn Whartan. No hook. you’r fine.”

I don’t doubt that at all, but I’d have to guess that this applicant had some amazing ECs (Intel, Siemens, Nasa research stuff, some kind of unheard-of musical talent, etc.) because most with a 2100 do not get accepted to those kinds of universities. Acquiring at least a 2200 is the safest bet for these kinds of colleges (there’s only 1 shot at it, and you don’t want to miss it). Now, of course, if you already have a 2200 or so, it probably isn’t in your best interest to retake the test. However, if you do have below a 2200, I’d suggest taking it 1 more time to see if you can get higher. If you can’t, then don’t worry about it and really make your application shine with your ECs, essays, etc.
