How much do they expect you to know?

How much do they expect you to know by the time you get to Orientation? How much of it will they go over with you and guide you through?

They don’t expect you to know anything. They will baby you through everything, don’t worry. Although I will say its a good idea to research what classes you want to take ahead of time, or at least have a rough idea of the classes you need, so that you aren’t stressing out there trying to figure out a plan. But honestly, even if you went in knowing nothing about any classes, you’d be okay. There are tons of opportunities to talk to counselors about anything.

You should know enough in your major that you have selected ten years ago to be doing Nobel level research, while having your classes planned out on the side as a formality. You should have your three year plan (for entering freshman) completed to which course you will take which quarter, as well as rational for taking each course at each time.

I’m just ■■■■■■■■…

You don’t need to know pretty much anything, just basics of how to not get lost on campus (i.e. able to read a map), and how much workload is right for you.

Be careful, most orientation counselors don’t know anything about what classes you should be taking.

I highly advise avoiding clusters.

^+1.
People say that clusters are a scam. THEY ARE.

Both my roommates took clusters and hated them. Avoid at all costs, just take three easy GEs instead.

Clusters are like arranged marriages. Sometimes they work and people really like it. But most of the time, it leaves you feeling trapped and generally unhappy.

^Best analogy. And I liked my GE cluster.

haha lol at the arranged marriage = cluster thing…SO true. most people I knew that signed up for clusters dropped them by spring. the bad parts definitely outweigh the good.

and yeah, orientation counselors might be helpful if theyre the same major as you. otherwise, they might have a general idea but…as far as picking classes goes, do your own research. CC/talking to older students is way more helpful.

what is a cluster exactly?

It’s an orgy of three arbitrarily chosen subjects that are randomly mashed together, and called a “cluster”. More like cluster****, imo.

It’s a one year long class. You get three GE credits in total, as well as a writing II credit. I liked my cluster, but I think I was the only oddity in that group. Then again, I’m Indian, so the whole arranged marriage thing works out fine for my people :P
