I know that UC schools can go from only semi-selective (Riverside) to Super Selective (Berkely, LA) but as a general rule, being that they only look at Sophomore and Junior year, does class rank count which is impacted by Freshman Year grades?

My first Semester Sophomore GPA was a 4.00
My Grades were
English Honors B+
Spanish 2 A-
AP Euro* A-
Chemistry A
Pre Calc Honors* B-
Digital Photo A+
*-Weighted

Anyways my Freshman GPA was not very good at least for first semester, 3.50 Semester 1 and 3.83 Semester 2, but the Summer before Freshman year I took Health and Tech online for a graduation requirement and Got B's on both which brings down my GPA even more. (I thought it was a pass/fail class and would have tried harder if I knew that you actually got a letter grade for it.)

Anyhow, my overall GPA is a 3.70 counting freshman year. Class Rank is 80/427 which puts me in the top 18% roughly.
I know I'm smarter than my class rank and people think I'm in the top 20-30 before I tell them. But most UC schools have the majority of their admits in the top 10% of their classes.

Point being, as for as admissions to any UC Schools, will my class rank hurt me that badly if me Sophomore and Junior GPA's are around a 4.00-4.10? But I'm maybe in only to top 12-14% in my class by the end of my Junior year? In my school I know somebody who had exactly a 4.00 overall and she was ranked 27/427, so I would assume that to be in the top 10% (Rank #43) I would need to get my GPA to probably around a 3.85-3.90, which is very possible but still. How much of a factor is class rank for UC schools in general?

I don’t think freshman year matters to them, like you said, they only look at 10th and 11th grade year so class rank shouldn’t matter. If you look at UCLA freshman stats it only has overall GPA stats but no class rank stats. When they have visited my school (I am a teacher) the UC’s always say they know people screw up freshman year. So I wouldn’t worry about class rank.
Here is UCLA freshman stats, just keep your grades up

Looking at your classes again though, you may want to take some tougher classes next year. One thing the UC’s have said is they want to see how you do in the harder classes.

I’m taking AP Calculus, AP US History, AP English, Physics, Spanish 3 and a PE (A graduation requirement) And I don’t think my schedule is that bad for a sophomore, AP Euro is tough and I’m pretty advanced in math for a sophomore being in Honors Pre Calc.

Class rank as stated by your high school is not considered by UCs.

However, some characteristics which have an indirect correlation to your class rank are considered. Such things would be achievement in context with opportunities at your high school, and eligibility in local context (your UC admissions GPA exceeding the top 9% UC admission GPA of previous classes at your high school).

The eligibility in local context calculation does allow UC campuses to estimate class rank for common data set reporting.

Note that UC admissions GPA does not include grades earned in 9th grade, although holistic reviewers will see all of your courses and grades.

If you look at their common data sets, you can see what they count. I was looking at Berkeley and UCSD yesterday and “rank” was marked “not considered.” I’ve not looked at EVERY common data set for every UC but those are two of the most competitive and they don’t consider it at all.

Just a general comment about rank as well… it’s not static. Sophomore year is bad for a lot of kids. Some start losing steam in tougher classes junior year. You will likely continue to rise if you keep your grades up.

Oh, and I agree, your Sophomore schedule looks plenty rigorous though I question them giving you AP English now considering you’ll have nothing to grow into Junior and Senior year. Very odd.

Turtle Time what are you talking about? I’m in English II Honors right now as a sophomore, I’m taking AP English Comp as a Junior and AP English Literature as a Senior

And yeah, for sophomore year, most people who are ahead of me in class rank because they got 4.0 both semesters freshman year were significantly lower than my GPA for this last semester, a lot of them got their a$$ handed to them by AP Euro or a tough math class (Algebra 2 Honors or Pre Calc Honors)

RHS, don’t freak out haha. I thought you said you were a sophomore now and in AP English. In our area AP Comp and Lit are Junior and Senior classes.

Same in mine. AP Comp is Juniors and AP Lit is Seniors.
