I am not betting on tobacco either. I am betting on marijuana. legalization of marijuana in US is only a mater of time. Altria has the equipment, the supply chain and distribution established. The moment the law is passed, I bet MO will double in price and dividend.
Dad II, I think itās a matter of a dash, although perhaps you are pulling our legs. āMore than a 6-digit amountā would be 100,001+, but āmore than 6 digitsā would be at least a 7 digit number, or more than a million.
In any case, Iām with Hayden ā itās nice to see people making money. Although, to be honest, since my wife is still working, Iād really rather be buying assets on sale. When she retires, Iāll just be cheering for rallies.
I disagree with @busdriver11 on this one subject. I have no desire for a good stock tip. Iāll allow myself a little humblebrag: Iāve done wonderfully well knowing nothing about any particular company or stock. My wifeās job being what it is, I couldnāt ethically act even if I knew anything, but thereās no risk of that, because ignorance is bliss and Iām quite happy
Dad II, no laughing about your cameras. One of my favorite cameras is my D700, which I still own and will give to a kid when Iām sure that they will treat it with respect.
This is in reference to the other thread in which someone lives in a 3.5 million $ house said they are middle class. Other than winning the jack pot of a big lottery, I donāt think I will ever be able to buy a 3.5 million $ house.
IxnayBob, you have no idea how much I appreciate your comment.
Sorry for autocorrect, ixnay. Your name isnāt Insu.
Most people, and especially no āmiddle classā folks, can afford a $3.5M house. And she sounds about as middle class as some of the posters are as ādirt poorā. At least her family seems to have paid for her college education legitimately.
In their market, most everyone is doing well. Nice that the economy is improving.
@jym626, insu thanks you for the clarification. Iām not embarrassed to admit that I scrolled back, looking for where I missed the post by insu :). Dāoh!
I donāt know much about stock, though I sure wish Iād bought my companies stick when the market tanked in 2008. I think it has gone up by 600% or so since then. What an idiot, I knew it was a steal.
Iām just have a tiny Roth account I play with, so it doesnāt keep me up at night, and need another small amount of stock to mess around with.
Ixnay,
The typo was in # 4810. Darned autocorrect. and DadII 100k + IS a lot of money. To most everyone. Can pay for 2 yrs of room and board at many top colleges. Many of us did. Some off you were more fortunate.
Bob, youāll always be insu to me from now on
Now that we got the correct understanding of the numbers, I do like to go back to my original post and clarify my points.
Between 2008 and 2014, we did not have much to invest. We could not put max allowed into 401K nor max amount into Roth accounts. By early 2014, after paying the last tuition bill (full pay), we looked at our numbers and were wondering if we could ever retire. Since then, we put every $ we could into saving.
When I saw what we have been able to achieve in the past 7 months, I was so happy and wrote that post. While I made a mistake in describing the numbers, I appreciate posters who discuss that per se without any judgment.
I have significantly reduced my time on CC. because there are a couple of people who always, I mean 100% of the time, will make very negative personal attack with baseless accusations with every post I made.
I am happy about something and I want to share it. I am glad it is done and I will be back when the gain is more than 6 figure.
Dad II - Congratulations on our high earnings. Itās great that you can live on $20k/year (plus house cost, which I assume will be paid off before you retire). SS should be able to cover much of your need in retirement.
āI am happy about something and I want to share it. I am glad it is done and I will be back when the gain is more than 6 figureā
Please do share good news. And definitely share good ideas. At this point in many of our lives, we are looking for all the ideas we can get.
Living on 20K/yr is pretty miraculous. I think we spend half that much on just coffee and wine alone.
@busdriver11, you can refer to me by any name you like. Itās funny, because Bob is not my name, and the username IxnayBob came about because I finally got tired of people mangling my real name all the time when I ordered carryout or gave my name waiting for a table, so I just started answering Bob when they ask my name.
@jym626, I saw where you called me insu, but before you mentioned it was an autocorrect, I went back through the thread wondering, what the hmmm was jym referring to?
Phone does its own unique autocorrects, ixnay. Catch some but not all.
As for baseless comments, we all know thatās not true. But do you really want to go there, dadII ? Donāt think so.
Btw, there is a bragging thread for such posts. Thatās where the shameless brags usually go . Many of us have posted our proud moments there.
DadII,
Claiming posters ā100% of the timeā respond āevery time you postā is a completely untrue, disingenuous statement, and you can easily see that by looking at your own post history. Its painful to some who truly were poor and didnt have discretionary income for luxuries to have it brought up again, directly or indirectly. They are the true victims. No one wishes you ill will. People are happy for otherās good fortune. It can just be seen as less than diplomatic at the very least.
āIn my trade accounts, I have majority of my $$ in MO, in thousands of shares. My first $10,000 purchase has turned into over $30,000 now with dividend re-invested. My goal, as I have discussed on CC before, is to have $20,000 a year income from dividend when I retire. Whenever I have saved up enough, I buy 500 shares of MO.ā
Great job Dad II! You picked the best performing stock and ontinues to work even though the cigarette consumption in the US has been declining: http://www.fool.com/investing/general/2015/02/13/the-extraordinary-story-of-americas-most-successfu.aspx
LOL. Dang, I think most middle class families would love to have access to a āprivate client bankerā
I live on around 20k a year. Please teach me the ways of being able to afford a camera, etc on that amount. Here, Iām just trying to eat.
You must be some kind of magician, Dad II. :-B
roman - That 20K/year excluded mortgage/taxes.
