How much do YOU think YOU need to retire? ...and at what age will you (and spouse) retire? (Part 1)

The end of this year. My husband will file for his pension soon. He needs the pension to get health benefit for me to retire.

Whoa, congratulations! That’s got to be something to look forward to! That is practically tomorrow.

Yes, but I won’t allow me to think of it yet until Xmas. It’s just make it a lot longer, the waiting I mean. So I will start counting down Dec 1.

So funny. Maybe you should do something special each day of the countdown. That involves chocolate, or something good.

Actually, I only work 2 weeks in Dec and then go on a family vacation for 2 weeks, that just make it sweet.

Oh yeah, 14 day countdown! Remind us in December when it happens, we can celebrate it here!

H retired at age 70 and I am only working VERY part-time at a nonprofit I created, doing what I enjoy. It’s a pretty good situation for us. H was offered contracting opportunities but he happily said, “No,” and life is good. We were nervous initially at having H retire, as we thought we’d have a lot less income, but with pension, RMDs and no debt, things have been more comfortable than expected.

Congrats, @DrGoogle! Sounds like things will be very fun and exciting for you in 2016! Retiring can help improve health, as long as the person retiring doesn’t let their health be ruined while working and they find meaningful things to do in retirement.

Thanks HImom, I hope retirement is fun. Maybe my husband and I can start a low key business. We have some ideas to keep us busy but again there is no guarantee.

H and I have had no shortage of things to do in his retirement and my cutting back on work. We love travel, dining out, spending time with family and friends. H also does a lot of deferred maintenance projects around the house and my small nonprofit keeps me plenty busy.

My brother was worried about me, he thought I was too young to retire. Who knows after a year or two I might join the work force again, but with shorter commute. That’s what my sister is doing. I’m glad she is not retiring because it’s bad for her health. She told me stays up till 6:00 AM to surf the web and watch videos. But if she goes to work, she sleeps at normal time because she has to.

I can retire any time because I am past full retirement age. It scares me for many reasons. I will not have enough entertainment to entertain myself for whole day, my job is the most entertaining activity. I will not have as much income. Seems to me boring times on lower income type of living. We are planning to spend 1/2 of the year at another location, and while it is great, I also do not know what to do there except for walking to the beach, be at the beach, walk to restaurant to eat and walk back home to seat by the pool. I love all of these activities, but I will not have anything else there to do. I can try reading, but I hate it. TV is also boring, but even more so there. I do not like to travel either. I wish I can continue working from the beach/pool, but I can only suggest that, working long distance has been tried at my work and as far as I know, none of these people work for any reasonable period of time, they were gone quickly, apparently did not work out

Posting on cc during work hours seems to be a source of entertainment.

Dr G - That’s so great!

Colorado_mom, thanks I hope it works out.

According to the magazine sent out by our BCBS, the 5 things most needed for well being are:
Purpose–achieve your goals, be highly engaged & emotionally invested in what you do
Social–emotionally connect with your network of family, friends, colleagues
Financial–have enough for basic necessity and spend money on experiences & others
Physical–have access to info about healthy & unhealthy choices, get 20 minutes of daily physical activity, sleep 7-8 hours/day
Community–be actively engaged in your community through volunteer work & other activities

More information is available at Well-being (with a free quiz available to anyone).

“sleep 7-8 hours/day”- Good for you if you could! I can sleep only 3 - 5 hours. I cannot say my brain: “Sleep!” and expect it to go to sleep. This goal is frankly strange as what you can do, if you are totally fine with sleeping 3 -5 hours and anything more than 5 hours will give you a headache. Are you supposed to feel inferior because of your sleeping pattern or some kind of sick invalid? What one supposed to do and how one can control it if the body feels just fine for the past 25 years sleeping only 3 - 5 hours? This comment alone may make some people upset and cause insomnia.

Here ya go. Get your sleep or risk the potential consequences http://alumni.berkeley.edu/california-magazine/just-in/2015-06-02/lack-sleep-may-lead-dementia-new-research-finds-it-makes

There are no absolute rules in regards to the human condition, however most people should be getting more sleep than they do, and are chronically sleep-deprived during their working years. Plenty of research has shown that not enough sleep can lead to all kinds of health issues and shorten your life. We get on average 1.5 hours less sleep per day than we did 100 years ago.

If you need only 3-5 hours of sleep a day, you are keeping company with great people like da Vinci, Edison, Isaac Newton, Napoleon, Franklin, Tesla, etc. Good for you!

And
 they are all dead
Look where it got them

Too funny!
