How much do YOU think YOU need to retire? ...and at what age will you (and spouse) retire? (Part 1)

Just borrowed a book, “Beyond the Grave,” by Gerald Condon about issues that come up with estate planning (or poor to no planning). It’s an interesting read about how so many family rifts are caused by inheritances and perceived unfairness. It does suggest various options.

This is useful to consider—if we don’t spend our last dime on end of life care, we may have some assets to pass on.

Question, fellow CCers. Do you do your children’s taxes or let them do their own?

My son wants to do his own, even tho my accountant charges very little to do his.

I’d let him do his own if he wants to! I plug baby kiddo’ stuff into TurboTax as hers is just a federal w2, but I expect that she would want to do her own on my computer.

I have done them so far because my kids have made very little money, but I will expect them to start handling them on their own soon.

We still offer to let our youngest sign on to our program and use our account to do her own. Beyond that, no. I have a friend who did her d’s taxes through d’s undergraduate years ( probably for the best), through the kid’s MBA and CPA certification years (what?) and up to marriage.

No, once our kids are launched, we quit reviewing their financials. I would have had serious problems if my In laws wanted to “help” do our taxes as a young married kid.

@bookworm , how old is your son?

My accountant does my kids’ returns. D1 pays for her own service and D2 (very simple) is free.

Yes, that’s great.

My D is in grad school, not MBA. I will be doing hers until she is truly launched.

I do my kid’s taxes on TurboTax. If they ever even mention wanting to do them, I’d pass em over in a heartbeat. But I do a good job, and they are happy for me to take care of them. They are very simple right now, but may get more complex soon.

Our S does his own taxes and has been since he graduated from college. D has no earnings, so files no returns.

DS has considerable income, currently from TA work and an internship. We do his taxes together. This December, we did some Tax Gain Harvesting, using up his 0% capital gains tax bracket, for either the last time or penultimate time. Once he can invest in his company, he will probably need a CPA.

I have a CPA go over my taxes, but prepare them first using TurboTax. I let the kids use my TurboTax.

“Do you do your children’s taxes or let them do their own?” - We used our Turbo Tax to do them while they were in college. And I think the first year after graduation DD did here on our Turbo Tax at our house, with help as needed. Now they do their own - I think they are simple enough that they use the free online version.

I buy the Turbo Tax program and share with my kids. My MO has always been to make them skilled in a multitude of ways. Sometimes one D bribes the other to do taxes for her. They are simple, as both just got out of grad school last year, though filing in multiple states makes it more of a project.

@bookworm, as your son is 30 years old, I think he should definitely be doing his own taxes. To me, it is an important part of financial literacy and independence. It’s a lot easier these days with software vs paper, of course, but going through the process oneself is still very helpful in understanding the inputs into the tax equation and a good annual check on things like retirement savings and charitable giving that just won’t hit home as much if someone else is doing it for you, IMO.

I do my husband’s taxes, too. And he’s 54. Hasn’t stopped him from being financially literate.

Mr. B is a handful of years away from his full retirement age. I would let him do the taxes, but he has not asked yet. There are 2 things he would not do: taxes and vacuuming. He says I have to outlive him so he will not have to do them ever.

So, @busdriver11, do you really think it is ideal that a 30 year old, barring complicated family estate issues, is having taxes done by a parent? Has your husband never completed his own taxes? And in this instance the 30 year old has stated an interest in doing them himself.

My son does his own here so we are available for questions. My daughter does her own with her husband. My husband and I pay an accountant to do ours. Hmm, I guess my daughter gets the grown-up prize.
.

Our accountant does our kids taxes. He does both our business and personal taxes. He throws in the kids taxes for free. If at some point they want to do their own or hire their own accountant that is fine with us. One of my kids is getting married and his future wife might want to have someone else do them. The kids provide the accountant with what he needs. The accountant returns them to the kids in sealed envelopes which we don’t open. My kids need to pay estimated taxes and they are happy to have assistance.
