How much do YOU think YOU need to retire? ...and at what age will you (and spouse) retire? (Part 1)

If you don’t want to know, why are you getting the genetic test?

I am getting disorganized notice;y. Is that a sign of Alzheimer?

Well, as far as knowing…there’s a difference between knowing you’re high risk and knowing you’re SOL, with no hope. Maybe if I knew I was high risk I’d go on to take the make or break test. I haven’t decided yet.

Igloo, maybe you just have too much going on right now!

I wouldn’t want to know!!

I know what you mean, @anxiousmom. I always think I want to know everything…but something like that, I’m not sure. What if you spend a good 20 years of your life worrying about something like that, and you die before it happens anyways? That seems like a lot of time worrying.

Has anyone worked with/met with anyone form the nonprofit “Foundation for Financial Education” (F3E)? We attended a presentation about how to maximize SS payments, but to meet with them to discuss this, they wanted an unbelievable amount of personal financial information. They claim they aren’t selling anything but they wont talk about the SS piece without seeing everything. No thanks. Are my antennae up too high?

@jym626
There have been many folks here who have used the cheap Maximizemysocialsecurity program. It’s $40. You don’t have to give up any personal information. You can use a fake name. It just takes the data you put in and churns our the best time to take retirement benefits. You can play with different scenerieos. Does your spouse die young? Do you work longer?

Yes, thanks, @dragonmom - I am aware of that site. Have shared the link (and the book that was recommended) with DH and hopefully he will follow up. Just wondered if anyone was familiar with this organization.

I don’t trust sharing my financial info. It’s no one else’s business. I think you are wise to be wary.

That’s our feeling. He was giving terrible analogies to healthcare, claiming he needs to know it all (our whole financial health) to address how to maximize SS payouts. He doesn’t need to know one’s history of sinus problems to treat a wart.

Also, if the purpose is simply to maximize your SS payments, I can tell you how in just one word: Postpone.

That’s a given. But was curious b/c I am older than spouse to explore my filing for his at some point and then convertingit. Just want to maximize the payout. This guy gave an interesting presentation but the meeting felt like a slimy bait and switch. I politely left and said I’d get back to him after I spoke to my husband. Not…

Are there big differences when you take your SS between 66-67 and 70 1/2? II know how it works out in number not counting other soft factors. For one, you could take it early and invest wisely. I decided to take it on the early side to get the paperwork out of the way. I am drawing less from my retirement account thanks to SS. I assume it has increased nicely in the last few years and probably more than regained the loss of benefit not delaying until 70 1/2.

Not everyone with the high number developed AD. And I feel like if you know early enough that you are at risk, there may be other things you can do or treatments you can start earlier that will help.

Plus, if I knew I was at significant risk I might decide to retire earlier or do more in early retirement as I might not be able to later.

That sounds like a sneaky way to try to get customers. I would be very uncomfortable and annoyed. I hope at least that you got a free dinner out of it!

I love your new picture, jym. Those flowers are lovely.

I guess one has to figure out how they’d react. Would they take advantage to do all the things they’ve always wanted to, and get their affairs in order? Or would they spend the time worrying and being depressed about it? I’m not sure how I would react. Are you going to get the saliva test?

My doctor said that taking curcumin appears to have a preventative effect. Seems like that’s a good place to start.

Wow, Bunsen, that’s some interesting information. Sounds like one should be very careful what medications they take and get in shape! I guess my husband won’t get dementia, he just went almost 20 min on the treadmill stress test. Me, that’s another story.

I’m gonna go out and get some serious exercise today, you’ve inspired me!

It’s not clear that the test is commercially available. I couldn’t tell from the article what the name of the test was.

I’ve been supplementing with curcumin for almost 10 years now. Hopefully it is doing some good!
