How much does a letter of recommendation REALLY help?

I'm applying an elite boarding school as a freshman for next year. My dad's friend from college is on the Board of Trustee's, and has a child at the school. She is writing me a letter of recommendation. I know it can't hurt me, but how much does it help? She is also a big part of an admissions office at another school (not in the same boarding school division). How much will her letter increase my chances? I thought I made a fairly good impression when I met her.

Also, I have both of my English teachers (one from 6th grade, one current) writing me a Special Interest form for writing. Will that help?

You will know your admission results on March 10th, but you will not know which components of your application made any difference, positive or negative, so no sense second-guessing.

I’m not sure what a “Special Interest” form is, but if it is not specifically asked for by the school you are applying to and/or you are exceeding the requested number of recommendations, it’s not going to help you any. Most schools are looking for recommendations from recent (current year) teachers.

As a courtesy to the Board member, if the AO’s decide not to admit u, they will probably not give u an explicit rejection letter but will disguise it as a WL.
