How much does Affirmative Action improve my chances??

You provided us with your UW gpa, but a better measure of how you compare to your peers would be a rank. Care to share?

My school does not officially rank but it is probably around 15-20%. I go to an elite private school. My senior year grades may bring this up a tad.

I hear and see (on these boards) so much about "lowered standards" for URMs. There are the stories of this kid and that with ridiculously low stats who got in ONLY because he is in the URM category, and how he was accepted over the top kids in his school. In reality, with all of my boys and their peers, all of my friends and their kids, those URMs who got into top schools were not the one who would elicit gasps upon admittance. Their profiles were such that they were good contenders regardless of ethnic background. And many of them were denied at some top schools, even as some were admitted. The hype would always begin when someone who is non URM with stats above can be targetted who was turned down whereas a URM could be found that was accepted with lower stats. Kind of a selective comparison, in my book.
Though I don't believe that it has yet come to a point where ethnic considerations are only the final tipping point, it is getting closer, and those URM kids I know who were accepted to top schools were good picks for the schools regardless of skin color. The only kids I have seen that have raised my eyebrows in admissions results are the super athletes. The development and legacy kids I know seem to apply to schools that are good fits for their profiles.
