How much does being a legacy help?

I'm a double legacy (both parents) at Wharton, my top school choice. I'm applying ED but I'm out of state. How much does the legacy part help?

More legacies are rejected than accepted. If you have everything else to be competitive, the legacy status may help slightly, but, unless your parents have donated a buillding, don’t count on it to get you in.

Legacies do get a slight advantage during the ED round (and none during the RD round). But, as Wordworker points out, that assumes that you are otherwise a competitive applicant, and more legacies are rejected than accepted. All else being equal, however, it will give you a slight boost if you apply ED.

In terms of being out of state, that’s irrelevant. Philadelphia residents do enjoy a bit of an advantage in the admissions process, but remember that geographic diversity is also very important to Penn (and other top schools). Only 16% of the Class of 2016 is from the entire state of Pennsylvania.
