How much does being a URM help at Harvard?

I do applaud you for noble cause, I just cannot bring myself to turn down H (if I get in by some stroke of luck and alignment of planets, stars, and constellations) because of who my parents were. I didn’t choose them, and so I feel no guilt whatsoever in what I receive because of who they are.

“it’s not a bunch of bull. For instance, both my father and grandfather went to Duke University. And my grandfather’s contributed millions to that school. I could easily get in. But my grades just aren’t up to par for standard Duke students, and I’d feel like a fake, being there only because someone related to me went. I’m actually going to a state university next year, funnily enough.”

I know my grandpa would be mad as hell at me if he donated millions of dollars to a tier 1 school and I didn’t even go. I would’ve at least applied.

And of all schools… you shouldn’t feel bad at duke. They have a huge amount of development cases. That’s one of the main reasons why they advanced- because they fundraised like crazy.

My grandfather attended Amherst, Yale, Duke, and taught at Princeton. I will NEVER impress him academically. So, that’s not a worry for me. And he didn’t contribute so his successors could get in, he contributed because he had a lot of money and nothing to do with it.

Well in all honesty you do not know if that is true. I doubt that you have evidence to actually PROVE that URM’s got accepted because of their race, it may certainly be true but not an entire statistical fact.
But I think people miss the reason that minorities get a boost in the applicant pool. The reason why apps are accepted is because they standout. I will use Yale’s numbers to show my point.
Last year Yale recieved about 22,817 total apps and 1700 were from black applicants. So already that means that the black applicants have differentiated themselves from the vast majority of applicants just on the basis of being black so they are more likely to get in.

Playing devil’s advocate: I’d estimate that not more than 100 (probably not more than 5, lol) of Yale’s applicants were named Zarathustra. Does that make people named Zarathustra more likely to be admitted? :P

and @impm5150: So Pinkerton wasn’t out yet. So what? You still have no proof that Rivers Cuomo was underqualified.

You shouldn’t stand out because of your race or your age or anything else like that, you should stand out because of your academic accomplishments. I have a friend who’s graduating high school when he’s 15–should he get into Yale when an 18-year-old with better grades couldn’t?

I am a URM also. And I do not care.

Do you care that I had to learn English, my parents had to earn their degrees over again, and we had to live poorly for a while when recently arriving to the US???

I think not, so dont give me that bull ****.

Imp…

No. Because a 15 year old would have a terrible time at Yale. What kind of honest social life could you have?

And sorry… but there just aren’t enough academic accomplishments to distinguish people. Apparently you haven’t heard of “holistic admissions”.

This isn’t some flagship public school where admissions are your test scores. It’s Harvard.

Quite honestly, you could take the top 5000 applicants who applied to H, and they would all probably have the same or nearly the same academic records.

Why on earth would you graduate from high school at 15? That’s just dumb. It screams “I have no life, I love books, I’m super smart but I don’t even know how to make friends.”

True? I don’t know, but that’s what it would appear to an AdCom.

It wasn’t his decision, it was his parents’. Do you think he said, at age five, “Yes, I want to skip the first grade?”

Either that or the 15 year old is attention deficit… how can you enjoy college at 15 when everyone else is 3-4 years your elder.

It wasn’t his decision, it was his parents’. Do you think he said, at age five, “Yes, I want to skip the first grade?”

His parents screwed him over then and someone should have told them what they were getting into. And he had to have skipped more than just 1st grade… He’s like 3 years ahead.

Which brings me back to my point, is it fair? No. Life ain’t fair. Get over it.

Wrong person lol ><

You sound kind of jealous, bro. Are you just angry he’s going to have his PhD at the same age you’re going to be getting your undergrad?

Lol only on the Harvard forums would - oh you’re just jealous of the 15yo because he’ll have his phd first!- be an insult.

I think we’re approaching a previously unheard-of level of nerdiness on this forum. Fo rlz.

You sound kind of jealous, bro. Are you just angry he’s going to have his PhD at the same age you’re going to be getting your undergrad?

lol. 3 years to get his Ph.D.? Good luck.

And quite honestly I’m not jealous. Enjoy being with people my own age. I bet the kid never got to go to parties or anything. There’s a huge huge huge maturity difference between 15 and 18. It’s only 3 years, but it’s a lot.

But I’m probably wrong. He probably gets all the ladies, goes to all the parties, has the hottest date at prom (I’d give him props if he even had a date for prom who was a senior), and is going to Harvard. Yeppers. You got me.

" Lol only on the Harvard forums would - oh you’re just jealous of the 15yo because he’ll have his phd first!- be an insult. "

PWND!!!

I just raised the nerd level even more. Almost to the level of the 15 year old with his HSD.

He’s not going to Harvard, he’s going to Emory. And for real, you sound upset, man. Do you need a Kleenex?

BTW - MOST KIDS AT HARVARD DIDN’T PARTY IN HIGH SCHOOL. This is why you won’t get in.

Personally, I’m jealous of ZFanatic’s Native American.
