how much does being a URM help?

Can a URM with a 3.8 uw GPA and a 1900 SAt get into a top 25 university excluding harvard, yale...etc.

yes (10 char)

A lot comes into it, recs, type of school, income....But yes, frankly a lot of non urms get into top 25 schools with those stats. If you're thinking ivy or top LAC focus on raising the SaAT to as near 2200 as possible.

most small LACs in new england are desperately trying to increase diversity, and are actively recruiting both non-white students and non-northeast students.

so a latino from florida with a 1290 & 3.78 has a chance? OMG,lol, i love CC

It helps more if you're also low income + first generation.

argh, hows 50-50... daddy no HS, mommy some college no degree, but 98/99k

when you say first generation, does that mean no member in your family went to school in the US or just any college? ie. My dad went to a university in a different country, but I'll be the first to apply to US colleges. Does that make me first generation or not???
Thanks..

First generation is only a very small tip factor (not an advantage, just a tip) and is usually taken into consideration with other factors (low income, under performing school, student working or taking care of siblings, etc).

Remember, there are some students who even though they may be first generations, they come from very affluent backgrounds and have been given every advantage so being a first generation gives then no tip factor.

Definition of First-Generation Students: Undergraduates Whose Parents Never Enrolled in Postsecondary Education

If your parents attended college outside of the U.S. you are not a first generation college student.

Regarding not finishing college- It depends on the college and will be taken into consideration with other factors (ex. low income)

my parents learned english at a CC... not technically enrolled for an AA degree... but as part of an ESL thingy in the early 80s... my mom did like a year in her country, but stopped when she moved her... so am i first generation? (dad didnt get HSD/GED)

If your parents attended college in another country (and you are saying that your mother did) you are not considered first generation.

Also, you stated and income of $98- 99,000 so even if you were a first gen, it probably would not be much of a tip factor for you because you come from a high income family.

can a URM with SATs in the 1700-1800 range and gpa with a 3.1-3.3 but with alot of ECs and some awards make it to at least GSP at NYU RD?

Your stats are a little low and NYU is not at a loss for attracting URMs (remember NYC has a school system of over 1 million kids).

If on the off chance you should get into NYU, it is very likely that you are not going to get any money so be expected to pay a large share of the 50,000 cost of attendance. Expect to be close to a full paying student.

what about 3.7 uw, 3.9 w, top 25% (170 ppl), medical magnet school, single 4th grade teacher mom (50K), Mexican male with like a 2000-2100?

Note to op: sybbie719 also has an excellent post on the thread in this section entitled "Are stats on CC unrealistically discouraging?" .

In that post it discusses the chances for different groups (including URMs) at Dartmouth. You might want to go take a look.

so how am I looking?
