How much does being black (AA) actually help in admissions?

Especially top rated schools.

Say for instance you have an African American with an 1850 SAT score, 4.15 gpa, a few good leadership positions, low income
and an Asian/Caucasian with a 2150 SAT and a higher gpa, more impressive ECs...who is more likely to get in.

Personally, I feel that ethnicity helps in the sense that a minority with ‘good’ scores is more rare. There may be many Asian/Caucasians with similar scores and great extracurriculars but not as many good scores/great extracurriculars among minorities. This helps the minority to be ‘unique’, i guess. A lot of people on CC say that if you are a minority you can get in anywhere, which isn’t true, but I can’t deny, a minority with lower stats still may be accepted to a top university over a non-minority with better stats.

It’s all about being scarce. Minority w/ good scores and EC and one of few people in your area to apply helps. If you’re a minority and there’s tons of others in your area applying it doesn’t help as much at more selctive colleges.
