how much does being from utah help?

I'm a senior who just applied...and i'm from utah
our high school almost NEVER has out of state graduates.
does it help or not?

ps i applied ED

this could slightly help but potentially not at all… the only way it helps is if there are a very few number of people from utah that applied because colleges like to represent all 50 states

i would guess maybe 10 people from utah MAX

it’s not going to help, I’ve never heard of the admissions criteria giving points for geographical location.

^Unless you’re from the Carolinas.

i’ve heard this from other prestigious universities but not specifically duke so don’t take my word for it

and 10 max (what’d i’d guess too but idk)… is this just a pure guess or do you have any concrete reason to believe this?

i doubt it would help.

IMHO, I probably won’t help. Duke doesn’t really worry much about geographic diversity since they have people from all over the US and across the world.

Geographical diversity is “considered” at Duke. You only have needed to look on collegeboard to see this. So yes, being from Utah will probably give you a tip.

Considered is a very murky concept though. That optional essay on the supplemental application is also “considered” but doesn’t officially factor into admissions decisions. If Duke does a point based system or anything structured of the sort, then most likely geographical residence won’t help in that sense unless you live in the Carolinas.
