How much does being hispanic help (or hurt)?

As the title says; how much will being hispanic help (or hurt) for good colleges (such as but not limited to Ivies)? Born in Argentina.
I have heard that being hispanic is becoming the "new" being asian, meaning that it hurts for getting into college. Is this false or true? Will it help/hurt?

On a side note, so many kids in my school claim they are hispanic. One is a quarter brazilian. Does this classify as hispanic?

Thanks guys!

Your question has been answered a ton on this forum so I suggest you read those threads. To get you started please read this sticky thread that is at the top of this forum.

I have never head that “being hispanic is becoming the “new” asian”. The numbers sadly are not where they should be for Hispanics high school graduates. For example California has the highest percentage of Latinos in high school at 51% yet only about 20% of California Latino high school graduates attend a 4-year college. http://www.ncsl.org/documents/educ/trendsinlatinosuccess.pdf

The sticky threads on this forum are very helpful. For instance, the Resources sticky thread has a section about Hispanics and the College Admissions, which discusses the factors that adcoms look at within the Hispanic pool of students.

Whether or not Brazilians are considered Hispanic depends on what you are asking about: the CA, NHRP, other scholarships, fly-ins, etc.

Spending some time reading the sticky threads, other current threads, and using the Search function (eg. for Brazil) can go a long ways to educating yourself. Not as quick as starting a thread to ask a FAQ, but a lot more rewarding if your interest is to understand the role of ethnicity in the admissions process.
