Hello, I was wondering how much class rank matters when applying to college. I’m not going to say my rank, but I am in the top 5% of my class. How much of a factor is this for college applications?
Thanks

Even though rankings do matter, the more important thing is your GPA, SAT/ACT, ECs, teacher recommendations, etc. Some schools have harder curriculums than others, and the same can be said about a student’s schedule. They say if you are in top 33% of Philips Exeter, you’re very likely to be accepted into an Ivy. However, at other schools, the valedictorian might only be able to get into a school that only might be in the top 100 (not our school, but others for sure).
I agree with @BiologyMajorHere . They matter and they don’t. Some schools don’t release rankings because it is a magnet school and everyone does well. Or they want to prevent the gaming of the GPA to be valedectorian (Not taking Art classes so as not to have a non-honors class). But in some states, you have to be in top 7% to get into UT Austin or top 10% to get free Community College.
If you are in the top 10%, you are good.
