How much does community matter on an applications

Hey everyone,

I was just wondering how important community service is when colleges are making their decision for you.

My main highlight is community service, so I am hoping they value it greatly

Since high school, I've acquired about 1500 community service hours. I organize and manage a team for the Brain Tumor society every year, going on 5 years now. It raises about 1500 bucks a year, and we all do the brain tumor walk.

I also volunteer at a senior center 3 times a week, for about 5 or 6 hours each day. I have been doing this for about 2 years now.

Then I just have some miscellaneous community service activities within the community.

About 90% of my hours come from the brain tumor society and the senior citizen home. My dad died of brain cancer and my grandmother has Alzheimer's disease, so I am really passionate about those two organizations.

How much do colleges value community service, assuming that I am on par with all the other requirements.

Quality over quantity.

davidthefat that doesn’t really help…

“I organize and manage”
^that is what stands out. It is admirable that you are passionate about your service, but many, many students log many, many hours. Davidthefat is right…it is the quality of the service - level of involvement, taking leadership positions, etc that makes it stand out to admissions.
Of course, the fact that you volunteer should mean much more than just what will get you into college…and it is clear that it is. Be sure to expand on your passion …why you do what you do and examples of your commitment.
Good luck!!

Some LACs, Clark University for one, award merit scholarships for community service.
