How much does early decision help you?

Okay, the title pretty much covers it. I read through pretty much the whole listing of the stats for Cornell's ED class of 2010, and I was pretty surprised at some of the kids who got in. And also, in the chances threads for ED here, I see that people are significantly more optimistic in their responses.

I also know the percentage of acceptance is higher for ED than RD, but that's just quantitative data. What are your guys opinions on how much of an edge ED should give you?

I think you have the wrong question. You should focus on whether Cornell would be your top school, and whether you can commit through a binding ED program without comparing financail aid packages from other schools. I would think that ED may provide a slight edge because the school knows you will attend if accepted, but I'm not sure that it lowers its standards a lot to take ED students it otherwise wouldn't accept.
