I'm currently a high school senior who's going off to university soon and is wondering how much Facebook will affect my university and career life?

I know quite a lot of people and not all these people I know are perfect. I have a few people I know who got pregnant at 19 or got in trouble for drugs when they were younger. They were misguided. Will I be guilty by association? I'm a good kid and I don't have any racy pics or anything. I just a have a few pics of myself and with people from EC's. I don't swear or have any personal information like my birthday, relationship status, or religion. My deleted apps from my wall and I only post links to videos ex Pokemon, or have status updates of ideas like "I wish it was summer.", not of what or where I'm going.

I know that government and Google along with employers can search your online history and stuff. But do you think any of the things about my Facebook will get me in trouble? I think my Facebook is fairly mild compared to many high schoolers? What do you think?

I wonder the same thing… I used to work on a campaign and when people applied I would look over their facebooks to make sure it was way too racy, but unless you had a huge “I hate (candidate)” sign on it, we tended to not really care.

At the same time, while applying for a government internship that involved security clearance I deleted my facebook. There wasn’t anything I thought of as too inappropriate, and I’m sure if they really search hard they can still find it, but I figured it’d be better to err on the side of caution.

If you believe a picture/info is questionable, make it private. Recruiters do check up on facebook to dig for information and if you believe something will get you in trouble, make your profile private. There are plenty of horror stories where people reach the final rounds of their interview process and not get an offer because they have too many pictures of themselves partying and drinking.

Untag/delete all pictures of yourself that you would not want a recruiter to see.

Set your profile to private.

Consider dropping your last name from your profile (though if you have a school email address, you can probably still be found).

ALL recruiters google your name before taking you into consideration. I know of previous experiences…

I agree on removing tags and stuff, that’s a great way to start.

Setting up a “normal” profile pic would be recommended as well so people will take you more seriously. I mean, you dont wanna hire somebody with a beer in his hand on his profile pic right?

There is another student at DS University with the same name,in the same class.

His Facebook picture has him shirtless with tassel pasties on his chest and a red plastic cup in his right hand.
