Hey, I’m sort of worried about GA Tech. I’m in-state, and I go to the #1 high school in GA (#7 in US) and it’s very competitive…everyone here gets into Tech easily but I’m not so sure because my GPA isn’t so great. I only have a 3.3. How much will that affect GA Tech? My SAT is 1540 (760V, 780M, junior year). I took the IIC and Writing tests once, but I only got a 720 and 730 respectively. I know they don’t care about that during admissions though so I will retake the IIC for placement and other school’s admissions and I will actually study this time, hoping for an 800. I didn’t miss any last time but since I hadn’t practiced I had a lot left when she called time, like 10 or so at least. Anyway, I’ve already taken AP World History (4) and AP US History (5). I’m taking Calculus, Physics C, Spanish Language, Microeconomics, and US Gov/Politics now as a senior. Hopefully I will get 5’s except Spanish Language cause I hear that’s hard, and maybe a 4 in Physics C depending on how hard it is, I really don’t know much about the exam itself. Do you think I will still be able to get into GA Tech based on my hard classes, SAT, and in-state position, or will my 3.3 stick out too much? Also, what engineering type schools will be a match for me? And safeties? And do you think I have a chance at Urbana-Champaign, Purdue, Carnegie Mellon, or Michigan (ann arbor)?

all those (including GA tech) look like matches. Except Purdue. As far as I know, Purdue isn't too selective, so Id say it was a definite safety for you.

what school do you go to? (i'm instate too)

Really? Well that's always good to hear...Yeah I sort of figured Purdue wasn't too selective...Anyway I was just worried cause a 3.3 GPA, especially at my school, is really really bad....But I also heard that being in-state and having good SAT really helps at Tech...
Oh, and could anyone recommend some good safety engineering schools based on my stats (3.3, 1540, 7 AP's). Oh and would being a leader in marching band help any? Cause I see Tech has a whole page on the app just for leadership...

daisy - I go to Walton High (Cobb)....

ahhh i thought so. walton's a great school.
seriously, if i were you, i wouldnt worry so much. walton has an excellent reputation, and tech seems more into test scores anyways. just to show how relatively little emphasis they put on grades (or so it seems), they ask for a self-reported academic transcript on their application.
I already got in to tech, and from what i've seen, one of the most important parts is portraying your extracurriculars well. since they have a slightly different format for extracurrics, be sure to mention specific accomplishments and examples of what you've done with your leadership positions.
Best of luck!

Thanks
As for Walton, yeah I do really like going here and it's a great school...there's this little problem of overcrowding though. Everyone, especially Oriental and South Asian families (mine included) move into the super expensive Walton district just to send their kids here. Like our house's current value is over half a million dollars, probably nearing 700 grand now, easily double it's proper value, just because it falls in the walton district (also dickerson middle school, which is the #1 middle school in GA but is supposedly more of jail than a school from what I hear). There are 2500 kids crammed into what was originally supposed to be a 1000 person school...even as we speak they are frantically building a new parking lot and entire new wing of the building...The building layout is a mess...You can tell there was an ordered core, then randomly added wings and stuff...There are wierd Y junctions, classrooms landlocked and sandwiched between others...and all these secret passageways and shortcuts which deem it impossible to keep track of students. Like there are literally 20 different ways in and out of the lunchroom, and we have a single security gaurd who quickly discovered sehe had no hope of trying to regulate the students, and instead serves the sole purpose of patrolling the grounds making sure students don't illegally park. (we have about 250 parking space for over 1000 senior and junior drivers...the people who live in the surrounding houses rent out their driveways to desperate kids to park at...some as much as 100 bucks a week, or more...). Er..I seem to have babbled a little too much....

Hmm....this board moves quickly...
bump

Walton is the best high school in Georgia? I would imagine Westminster deserves those honors.

Well I don't know I'm just going on the facts...Anyway...

bump ............. bump

Westminster is private. Walton, I believe, isn't. (?)

Yeah we're not private but we do have a charter (as long as 99% of parents vote to keep it every 5 years) which gives us a lot of extra rights and exempts us from many things public schools in the county have to do. Like we don't have to do block scheduling (thank goodness), we have "WEB" on wednesdays where school ends at 12:42 and students can either go home or stay on campus and use the rest of the school day to get together in study groups, go to teacher help sessions, engage in clubs and EC activities, make up tests and classwork they missed when sick, or whatever...we also have an online grades system that no one else in the county is allowed to have, teachers do all grades on their computer and it's updated online instantly, so students can log in to the school website and check all their grades daily, and know what they made on tests that day....stuff like that...

Anyway, back to my questions...
