i'm not trying to cover up my grades, b/c i do not have a D, but my friend and I were having a discussion yesterday about college admissions. She got a D as a final grade in one of her classes, and then got Bs on all her other classes. she got a 2250 on her SATs and does like 3 varsity sports, so she thinks that one D won't hurt her. what do u think? she won't listen to me anyway.

Yes, it will. With all those Bs and now a D, she is probably not looking at any of the top-tier schools, unless she’s going to be a recruited athlete.

you should take away from this a lesson in how powerful denial can be …

yeah anything top-tier is out. MAYBE if it was in freshman year and it was a C it wouldn’t be as big of a deal.

But yeah she should be looking at state schools.

She should look at some guaranteed transfer programs – this isn’t the end.

2200 SAT scores and all B’s and a D? Did she just not try? Does she go to the most difficult school on earth?

A D is too low. I’ve heard of Cs being forgiven, but not Ds. And if the rest are Bs… don’t hold your breath for her.

I’m gonna be a little skeptical of what the above posters say here about a single, lone “D”, as I know people that get in with a “D” or even 2 in ivies (non-freshman year) and the like (granted, most explained their circumstances. And no, they didn’t have exceptional hooks).

But all B’s…um, probably not. It also depends what class the “D” was in.

D’s can be overcome, especially if your friend does everything in her power to remedy that D. Why isn’t she taking summer school courses and/or dual-enrolling?

Figures as much…

Is she good enough at one of her sports to be recruited? I know a girl at USC who had horrible grades and failed a class (or two) but she is nationally ranked in her sport.

Not UF…

yeah, it really depends on whether she is getting recruited. a girl i know has okay grades in honors classes, but is being actively recruited for THREE SPORTS.

I think her B average with high SATs is more troubling than a lone D she can retake or whatnot.

eh, out side of the top 50 or so universities, and top 25 or so lacs no it probably won’t hurt her, which with straight Bs, depending on the riger of your highschool, would be reaches anyway, not saying staight Bs are bad, just lower than many applicants to the top schools, still above the vast majority of people entering college, especially with her sat scores. Also depends what course said D was in.

she got a D in her calculus AB class. do u think she should retake it?? idk if she’s being recruited for her sports, so i should probably ask her. see, i think the thing was that she was doing great freshman/sophomore year, then junior year hit with all these hard classes and being on 3 varisty teams, she was just so busy that she kinda failed math. what advice do i give her, b/c i dont wanna sound all self righteous and everything.

For damage control, she needs to build up a transcript of more impressive coursework, which is why I suggested dual-enrolling and summer school. But she’s probably missed the latter…

what’s dual-enrolling?

never mind. that was a stupid question. but should she retake the course?
