How much does Harvard care about clubs?

I'm going to be a junior next fall and right now and I'm not in any official school clubs. I do have some serious ECs--I started an economics team early this year and study math outside of school for at least a couple hours a day. For me, those activities are much more rewarding than participating in clubs at my school, so I haven't pursued office positions in any of them. I'm wondering if Harvard and the other top colleges care about club involvement. If so, I guess I could make a point to expand my econ team and officially register it with the school; the awkwardness would probably be worth an improved chance at the east coast schools.

Not sure if it's relevant, but my objective stats are all pretty solid and I'm mainly worried about whether my extracurriculars will look decent to adcoms.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

dude, get your act together. you totally need to sign up for EVERY SINGLE CLUB your school offers. every student admitted to harvard (according to their admissions profile) is part of at least 9 clubs at their high school and hold presidency (not secretary or public relations officer) in at least 4. if you don’t have these, i really don’t see them even looking at your application. but have you thought about applying to rensselaer poly? i think you’re a better fit there.

I’ll keep your incisive advice in mind, broski.

I think soccerstar was being sarcastic! I’m going to be a junior as well, but some of my friends in the graduating senior class got into harvard and one of them was only truly involved in a club she started, orchestra, and science olympiad. However, the club she started made a HUGE impact on our school, and she truly has a legacy.

No the distinctions between club vs team vs organization vs assembly vs whatever don’t matter. What matters is your accomplishments in your ECs, your responsibilities, your positions of leadership, their effects on your personal growth and the lasting mark that you’ve made on your school, town, state, country, whatever.

soccerstar… funny post, since I’m only part of like 3. haha. anyways @ subsidize, the importance of clubs is really what you find interest in / accomplish in the club / learn from the club. those are the most important things

Actually, I think clubs and ECs don’t really matter that much unless you’re passionate and show leadership. Colleges expect that passion and dedication to be reflected in things like awards, rec letters, and your personal statement. Joining every club at your school won’t help, and might even hurt, especially if it looks like you’re only getting involved to impress colleges.
