How much does high school success matter for transfer students?

Hey, I'm kind of new to this so if I posted this in the wrong place please do forgive me.

I'm doing very well in community college, A's + High B's, good relationships with my professors, started a blog covering local music in my area which is relevant because I'd like my major to be journalism and I'd like to transfer to NYU and I know practical experience is a factor in being considered.

I did TERRIBLE in high school from lack of effort. I'm wondering if even if I do extremely well in community college, get recs and the such, will my high school GPA hold me back?

It will be a factor as colleges do ask for your HS transcript. But, depending on the college, proving that you can do College level work in difficult classes is usually more important than the HS transcript.
