how much does honors program help if at all?

I am registered for my honors program at my local college which I am definitely not happy at all with it (thats why I want to transfer). Anyway, its really tough for me to change any of my classes, because if I want to change, I need to get a special online permit pass, and there were like 60 people there with no air conditioning. Anyway, you need that to give you a permit in and I was wondering if Honors will play a huge divisive factor in the transfer process for ivies, top LACs, etc. and possibly course load in general. Oh by the way, I am a freshman 3.11 HS GPA unweighted (I had to double check like 6 times, my high school didn't calculate my last semester until now) and a 3.9-4.0 weighted. I made a 26 on the ACT.

the honors program at my cc was certainly a huge help when transferring (although admittedly to no ivy leagues). Check with your current advisers to see if they have had previous students that transferred to the schools that you want to get in. For my cc, our honors program had established relationships with local universities but considering how large the program is where you attend (you said 60 in a class), it seems realistic that they have sent several students to ivy league schools in the past.

If not for the huge scholarship I received upon completion of the program, I would have considered it a complete waste of time. The $500/sem scholarship I received while in the program usually went pretty far for paying tuition but the lack of flexibility was ridiculous.

oh, how so was it helpful?

Oh and in more detail about mine- (not that I know that much, I’m a soon-to-be-freshman) apparently, we have to have one honors course per semester, and we get like early registration or whatever. The thing thats kind of on my mind is that I only registered for only one honors class (since you have to have at least one per semester- I only took the mandatory honors seminar for first year students), but I thought I wanted to take like 3 extra honors seminars/courses, and, rescheduling and finding time was just so difficult, not to mention I am worried about my GPA and my course-load. I just want more feedback on how honors programs are viewed by transfer college admission adcoms, especially since my university is like a third/fourth tier university. (Even though I am sure the classes are going to be just as tough as any other university)

other thoughts or opinions would definitely help me out

One thing you may want to consider -

Is there a distinction in title between honors students who meet the minimum requirements and those who take the maximum?

As far as GPA vs. course load goes, I don’t think I can give a good answer on that. I think the strength of CC honors programs is established relationships with universities. In my case, the admission counselor at my transfer school knew a lot about the honors program I took in CC.

Besides the distinction, honors programs sometimes make it easier to get involved. My classes usually had interesting projects that gave me things to put on my resume and talk about in interviews.

Honestly though, I think your honors program director or adviser is your best resource here.

oh cool. Yeah, I guess honors students do have their own distinct clubs and what not. I doubt I’ll be interested in that, mainly because it seems like these honors clubs are cut off to only honors kids- but we’ll see. I think my biggest concern is the fact that I should’ve taken as much honors classes as possible, thats why ‘GPA vs course load’ is really a big factor to me. I guess thats what has me most concerned.

Out of 23 JC/CC classes I took, only 1 was an honors course -> Dartmouth, UVa, Duke
