How much does interview matter for rice admission?

Im taking my interview this summer and i just wanna know if the interview, whether i give them strong positive impression or not, is even considered that much in Rice. Basically, If my interview goes well, does that make any significant difference in my chance of admission.

There is a thread from last fall about interviews you should be able to find. My son will be attending in the fall and my feeling is his interview had little or no bearing on his acceptance, but others may have different opinions on the impact of interview. I believe my sons interaction with his admissions counselor had much more impact than his interview.

@Ryan33 did your son talk to the admission counselor before the interview?

@kimdy0 My son would be attending Rice this coming fall. In my opinion an on campus interview with admissions staff will be more effective than an Alumni interview. An Alumni interview however still will be helpful as it shows demonstrated interest in Rice. Good luck!

Her talked with the admission counselor when she was at his high school and emailed them with several questions during the application process.

@TinTintoo i am doing on campus interview haha

@Ryan33 oh i see

Rice indicates in its Common Data Set that it “considers” interest in admissions decisions. I would think that interviewing at Rice conveys more interests than an alumni interview

I just got an email from Rice stating that I was recommended by a student as a good candidate for admission to Rice.

My daughter will also be attending Rice in the fall. She did not do an interview.

Just a single data point: We are an OOS family. Rice was a very high choice for last year. We flew in to Houston for an offered interview. It was with a student—not an admissions person (Senior year interview, after application filed). We didn’t even see an admissions person. The student said he would complete a form between his classes and send it to admissions. I felt the interview did not matter at all----and I’m sad we spent the $ to go. Find out who is going to interview your kid. Save the bucks and Skype if it’s just a kid. I think an alumni interview would be better than some kid in between classes.

I didn’t do an interview, and I’ll be attending Rice in the fall (with merit money). You can show interest in other ways, like going to info sessions in your town or emailing your admissions officer.

I’d do it, echoing sentiments above about interest. If you are from out of town, I would not make a trip out of it; do an alumni interview or skype if they offer it. Campus visits are a good time to interview, but if that ship has sailed, no need to worry!

I already had an on-campus interview and it went okay.

I agree–don’t go out of your way to attend an interview. I didn’t attend an interview at all, but I “showed interest” by emailing an admissions counselor and doing similar things like that. If you live nearby however, I suggest going on campus to interview, because what’s the harm?

sorry for the stupid question but what should i ask an admissions councelor to show that i’m interested?

@ak7903 not everyone has a same reason for the interest in school. Only you know how to show YOUR interest to the admissions counselor :slight_smile:

@ak7903 and @kimdy0 I agree! :slight_smile: Also, if you have any questions regarding the university that you can’t find online on Rice’s website or is unclear to you in any way, you can ask an admissions counselor.
