sometimes i think i am URM and ill get in to harvard. then i look in the mirror. does this happen to anyone else

no.

10char

It doesn’t hurt now does it?

I should know, I’m 3/4 Asian :)

I’m not fully asian but put asian on the common app anyway. Whatever.

Well…basically, you’re competing against other subgroups: others Asians, people from your region, people with similar interests/activities etc. rather than the whole of the application pool. Being Asian is only part of that equation. Does that mean you’re at an absolute disadvantage? Probably not. A generalized disadvantage against hispanic/Af-Am candidates who have SLIGHTLY lower scores and GPA? Perhaps.

Again, if you play the bassoon or double bass mightily well, you’ll definitely have a better chance than your twin (ie same ethnicity, same scores, same rank etc) if s/he played the violin. HRO (and the other orchestras) needs good bassoonists and bass players all the time. Ditto if you are a supreme Asian DJ. Those parties also need DJs. Basically, what can you contribute to the college (during or as an alum) that few others can?

With that said, I can think of ways for an individual Asian to become more competitive. I can’t think of ways to boost the percentage of Asians to more than 19-20%, since Harvard really does want to maintain a ‘diverse’ class, which means they don’t want their campus to look like or feel like UCLA…or any of the UCs for that matter.

I won’t get dragged into a debate about this online, so don’t ask me about my personal views on this matter.

(An Asian Harvard alum)

thz is stereotypical, but statically, wud u rather be chinese-american or indian-american?

Hmmm, interestingly I have just had an interview, and I agree with what Windcloudultra said. I am international, and one of the things they did specifially ask me was about my music. I play trombone and Piano, and those small details, small things that you can add to Harvard that few others can help you quite a bit. In my opinion at least

Well, depending on your melanin, there’s likely more of a chance of sunburn than there is for people of African descent, so it might hurt a little if you go to the beach. But sunscreen will prevent that. And then being Asian won’t hurt at all!

^ Lol Millancad FTW

A LOT…! you will NOT get in!!

^well, thx for ur inspiration. I have a feeling that it does not hurt at all to be asian, tho. ths iz b/c 20% r Asians. like if affirmative action is hurting Asians it kinda doesn’t look like it

^that is what you get for calling me a ■■■■■!!!

It doesn’t hurt to be Asian. It just helps to not be Asian.

I’ve heard that some Asian groups actually don’t hurt like Vietnamese, Thai, Indonesian, etc., but I’m not entirely sure. Because it doesn’t really sound fair to lump every single person within the Asian continent as one ethnic group.

SE Asian countries actually help. Like Laos, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Phillipines, etc. Since they are so under represented when compared to say Chinese People or Koreans.

I think part of it is also the fact that more SE Asians have first generation status than do Chinese or Korean applicants. That being said, there’s also probably a gap in average family income, which, as a better predictor of academic success than race, can’t hurt their chances either.

HAHAHAHA youwillsee! Way to stick it to the man :P

^ ur haha in double caps-- thts quite a laugh.
