how much does legacy count in admissions?

i am going to be a senior girl this year in high school. im not really sure where to apply and my parents keep insisting that I should apply to uva. They both went there and they think that that will help me in the admissions.

i do not have stellar SATs v660 m610 gpa of 3.72 and class rank of 17, which is in the top 10% of my graduating class. member of NHS and World Language HS, varsity swimming since freshman year and MVP 2 years, girls state nominee, silver medal congressional award recipient, gold award girl scout recipient, volunteer service award recipient, enrolled in all honors and ap courses, student of the month dec 2007, science student of the marking period 2007, honor and high honor roll every marking period, environmental club member.

I do not know if I should even bother to apply because I do not think the fact that my parents went there will really help tremendously. if anyone has any feedback that would be great.

Assuming your parents did not donate fortunes, it gets you in-state consideration during admissions (though you still pay OOS tuition if you get in and go), and the IS admit rate is a little less than 2x that of OOS.

Being a legacy does not get you in-state admissions consideration. Rather, the admit rate for OOS legacy applicants is about the same as that for in-state. However, the OOS legacy pool is quite competitive and plenty of OOS legacy applicants with much better credentials than in-state applicants do not get admitted.
