How much does Legacy help you?

My dad went to Duke both undergrad and grad. It is my dream school, and I'm planning on applying ED. How much does legacy status help you at a school like Duke?

Quite a bit IMO

It’s definitely a boost but you still need the creds. Without any other info. from you it’s too hard to tell

Legacy boost in ED round >> Legacy boost in RD round

Basically, if you’re qualified with stats, legacy, and apply ED, you’re likely to get in. Likely does not equal a guarantee though, but is much better than most applicants. Especially if your parent has donated money or plays an active role for the university. Whereas most people who are simply “qualified,” don’t get in. There are way more qualified applicants than spots available.

However, the RD round is different. It’s still a boost, but not nearly as large. I know somebody who got into Yale non-legacy and got rejected from Duke legacy…So, if you know Duke is your #1 school, I’d highly encourage you to apply ED. Again, you still need to have top qualifications but the admissions decision is less of a “crap shoot” than it would be otherwise. Good luck!

Edit: Also, based on my experiences, if you’re deferred ED as a legacy, they do weigh the fact that you applied ED as a legacy in the RD rounds (i.e. it helps that you applied ED since that indicates it’s your first choice).
