How much does location affect one's application?

Okay, so I'm applying to Pomona RD after being deferred at Amherst. I live in Maine, and I'm assuming there aren't many applicants from here. How will this help my application? Are they looking for regional diversity? What do you think my chances are...
-SAT (2110, CR680, M750, W680)
-SAT IIs (750 English, 620 US History)
-4 AP Courses (school only offers around 9)
-4.0 GPA
-Varsity Swimming 4 years, Swim Captain, Key Club, Play Cello, In Maine Youth Orchestra, Big Buddies Mentor, Involved in Exchange Program with Dominican Republic

I would greatly appreciate hearing opinions on what my chances may be!

Well, Pomona does like regional diversity, but Maine isn't the best place to be from. Typically, if you're in the northeast or west coast united states, then admissions will be a tad tougher.

However, statistically, you're excellent. And you show a fine dedication to your ECs. I think you still have a very good shot.

thanks... but I'm still curious. Maine is pretty far away from Pomona, is it just that they receive a lot of applicants from the northeast?

"The northeast" includes a lot of states where there will be a fair number of applicants from certain states: NY, NJ, Mass, CT. There won't be a lot from Maine and Maine is so much more its own place that I would think there will be some geographic advantage.

Alison, I dont think that being from Maine is going to be a deciding factor for Pomona. When they say they consider geographical diversity, they mean places where students typically dont apply from, such as North Dakota. Typically, Pomona receives a lot of applications from students from the Northeast, and because of that, I think you will be at a disadvantage.

Additionally, regional diversity is not an important factor, it is just "considered;" so as I previously said, it wont be the deciding factor as a good essay will.

oh I guess i just didn't think students from Maine typically applied to Pomona, guess I was wrong. are you applying there from maine?

According to Pomona's fact sheet here, 22% of the Pomona Class of 2011 are from the northeast, the largest region after California (31%). Having said that, I think applying from Maine will still help, not hurt, your chances. But your academic qualifications will still be the major determinant in your chance for acceptance.

Don't stress about it. FWIW, D was one of four applicants from her HS and three of them were accepted (2 ED1). You're vying for a spot with all applicants from around the world.

Good luck!
