I’m applying to transfer to UC Davis from a community college in computer science from california and I’m wondering how much if affects you. My gpa should be around 3.71 - 3.74. I’m not really familiar with the UC system and how missing classes affect you. I also saw on assist.org that they want a c++ class, but I took the same class in java, would that also affect me?
I know a bunch of people who transferred from CCC to UC without completing the IGETC path for their major. I think it may also depends whether you’re applying to the College of Engineering or to the College of Letters & Science, since both have the major Computer Science.
I’d suggest you that you check their website, and look for Upper-level division courses in both departments. If they require that you finish all the physics (mechanics + electromagnetism) before taking some upper-division courses, then, most likely, your chances will be affected negatively.
As for the C++ course, if the contents are the same, then it’s not a big deal. I took C++, and now I’m taking Prog II which is Java, both count in assist.org for my CC.
Good luck!
when it comes to UC admissions, REQUIRED means REQUIRED If you have a 4.0 and are missing one REQUIRED class you will be rejected.
It certainly depends. Does assist say the physics course is recommended or required as NCaleRent says? I was accepted to UC San Diego for computer science with very little science coursework actually completed - I hadn’t even started the physics series yet. I ultimately went with another school, but it really depends on the school. For UCLA, as an example, missing one course can significantly increase your odds of being rejected. However, for other UCs, missing one course might not be as much of a dealbreaker
it says
“Transfer students are strongly advised to complete as many preparatory courses
as possible for their major before enrolling at UC Davis. In particular, it is
highly recommended that students complete chemistry courses before transferring.
Preparing well for the major helps students move efficiently toward graduation
and significantly reduces time to degree.”
but when i scroll down to the courses, it only shows 4 groups that has physics, and biology and chemistry.
It doesn’t say anything else, are these preparatory courses? It’s a bit confusing
According to the UC Davis Transfer guide comparable UC Davis courses needed for Computer Science and Engineering:
You should have all these
• Mathematics 21A/B/C/D
• Mathematics 22A/B
• Physics 9A/B
• Physics 9C (except Environmental
Engineering major)
• Chemistry 2A
Computer Science and Engineering
The following additional preparatory courses are required for admission:
Physics 9D
Engineering 17
Engineering Computer Science (ECS) 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60
Communication 1**
Familiarity with UNIX (recommended)
**Only Communication 1 can be used to satisfy the communications requirement for Computer Science and Engineering. No credit will be allowed for Communication 3.
For Computer Science in L&S:
To be a competitive candidate for admission to selective majors in this college, you must have an overall GPA of 2.80 or higher.
Computer Science
Applicants must complete courses comparable to the following UC Davis courses with a GPA of at least 3.40 for each of the two course groups:
• Mathematics 21A/B/C
• Engineering Computer Science
(ENG CS) 20, 30, 50, 60
It is recommended that candidates meet or exceed the minimum required GPA in any completed course groups by the time of application. Candidates should maintain the course group GPA through the transfer academic update ling period.
