How much does "national youth leadership" help?

Do National Youth Leadership Forum and National Youth Leadership Conference
help in college admissions?

Aren't they stupid to put on because they're not merit-based at all, I mean anyone can get into either one of them right?

I got a letter from the medicine one, NYLF. they were like " one of your teachers has nominated you," I still do not know whom it was.

I did sign up, so I hope it will be worthwhile/helpful.( gonna do it at georgetown)

You paid that kind of money for a non-merit program?

Dude, almost all the "top 80" kids in my school got that stupid letter and my school isn't that smart......

my counsler was like " oh , this will really help you out, plus it will be fun, I would higly reccommend doing it."

and a kid in my school who got into penn SEAS did the engineering one, and said they were pretty good, so i signed up.

How much do you think that helped him?

Also: how much does it cost?

its expensice, upwards of 1k

the other program i was lookingat- Julian Krinsky internships at penn, cost even more and didnt have that much stronger of a program ( i think its weaker, since the one I am gonna go to has me visiting the National Institutes of Health).

Pretty sure it said somthing, although I cant be sure, I had no idea it was not merit based.

None of the things that we're talkin about is merit-based....
I think its the reason top-colleges look down on it.

I think they are just waste of money... I received a few letters too... and I love the National youth medicine forum (<-- something like that) because its letter was so delicate and elegant.....

They said they would have a selection comparing me to the other "nominee"... but afterward they sent a letter to invite me to go... obviously it was because there was nobody willing to sign up and pay them money..

I won't do it because I can't really learn things from this expensive experience...

I guess I will just have to see. Some of the programs they have are associated with the top schools ( they have one at harvard med school, brown, ucla, georgetown, emory).

Hopefully it will work out well, good luck to you guys.

i have to do it this summer, im doing the one on medicine. My parents are making me.....and i know its a waste of time......and i dont even wanna go in medicine..........................................................................

too late to try to switch from medicine to something else?

we already paid and all..........

im ****ed

So..basically nobody knows for sure if this program helps your college app or not?

NYLF was fun and it does looks good

can anyone answer my question?

i got one of them' letters.

They should call it "Leadershi+"

That program really is worth nothing; you can "self-nominate" for almost any of them - NSLC, NYLC, etc - with something like a 3.0 GPA.

I don't think it will help at all, but it won't hurt especially... all the same, I can't see that looking good to a top 20 school. On the other hand, things like Governor's Schools or HOBY (where only one person can attend per school) look decent.

yeah I got one too for Technology. It's a very persuading letter . . . and especially since I have a passion for technology, i was considering doing it? maybe not now but next year? (the summer before my senior year)

It also lists the former students from my high school who have gone to previous conferences of the "National Youth Leadership" in medicine, technology, etc.

is it really worth the money? and is it something that makes people "stand out" on college applications

We concluded: NO, and it can HURT you too.

how/why can it HURT you?

It makes you look like a loser trying too hard who couldn't get in anywhere better. I'm being completely serious.

If you want something for technology, perhaps try Andrew's Leap at CMU or something of that kind - competitive, higher quality, and reputable.
