Specifically SAT subject tests?

I scored a 33 on my ACT, but received a 680 and 620 on math 2 and chemistry, respectively. My school is different in that basically NO ONE takes SAT IIs (one other person in my class this year).

Is this basically an automatic reject from Olin? =/ I'm ranked 1 right now and should get great recs, but can SATs ruin it for me? (I also haven't done anything science/math amazing).

Blech, I hope not! Olin is my favorite!

(p.s. Sorry for posting so many threads here, it's just that I'm so excited about Olin!)

This is just my hunch, but I would say your SAT 2 scores are not going to result in any sort of automatic rejection. I did not do quite as well as you on my ACTs when I applied to Olin (many many years ago) and I did very poorly on my SAT 2’s. I don’t remember my scores. I was one of the first students my Chemistry teach ever had that took the SAT 2’s as well. I don’t know anyone else from my school who took them. I did not have any clue when I got there if I should even take Math 1 or Math 2, or what the difference was.

Now, Olin is tougher to get in now then it was waay back when I started (I was in the first class), but Olin’s main philosophy of looking at the whole person and valuing your essays and recommendations and activities…basically all of you, not just your test scores has not changed.

I honestly don’t even know what good SAT 2 scores are for Olin, so definitely see what other people post in this thread, but I think you should not worry too much. It’s not as if you got a 300 on your SAT 2.

According to the Princeton Review, Olin values Standardized test scores as Important. But ranks Secondary school record, Recommendations, Essays, Interview, Extracurricular activities, Talent / ability, and Character / personal qualities as Very Important.

Likely your enthusiam for Olin will show through in your essay and this will help balance any test scores that are lower than you had hoped. I hope this helps!

Thanks so much for all that info! Yeah, I really hope to get in to Olin!

I wouldn’t worry about it; I think I had lower SAT II scores, although my memory’s a bit fuzzy.. =)
Concentrate on getting your application done rather- it’s due this Saturday, no? If you (or anyone for that matter) need to talk to someone, you can PM or IM me. It’s a stressful time, so don’t forget to have some fun after all this.
Good luck!

How about SAT I?

I scored 800 on maths, 630 (9/12 for essay) on writing, and 530 (I need some dope!!!) for reading. English is not my first language. My SAT IIs are fine though.

Unfortunately, I’m planning to take the January test but it won’t be able to reach Olin on time.

Does my reading score simply put me in the rejection basket?

Please help

Hello jackwang,
Assuming your other test scores are fine as you say and that you’ve written a good essay and are a well-rounded student, your lower reading test score should not be a kiss of death. Additionally, Olin receives a lot of applications from students with high test scores who still don’t end up getting into Olin because they are not a good fit for the school. Hope this helps and Happy Holidays!
