Virginia seems like a beautiful state from what I've seen of it (I lived in NC 8 years and have been living in north Florida for the past 8). I want to go to college up there and I've been looking at William and Mary. From what I've heard it's very difficult to get into from out of state. Is it near impossible to do? I've taked the ACT once and got a 30 composite (33R/33E/29M/26S) and I'm going to take it again soon (been practicing science ALOT ever since I got that score). Hoping to get 32-33 range composite with my gpa at 4.25 weighted. That seems to be fine to get into W&M in state but what about out of state?

Hmm. That’s a tough one. What’s your GPA unweighted? Depending on your ECs and essays, if you got a 32 or 33 (preferably, of course, 33), I think you would definitely have a solid shot… maybe try the SAT and see how you do on that? (No science section. :D) William and Mary is different from UVa in a sense that I really think that it is more holistic, so I think the chances are a bit more random and less formulaic.

I swear, I didn’t know that that smiley face would turn out that creepy looking… didn’t even know that kind of green freak emoticon existed…

trevorlongstreet, I’m from WA and just got in yesterday. My GPA is 3.7ish UW (my school doesn’t offer APs and has a very different weighting system) and a 34 ACT. Yes, from what I know it is harder to get in from out of state, but it’s not nearly as impossible as I think you may believe. Good luck!

those numbers will definitely put you in consideration. Obviously there are a lot of other parts of your application, but those numbers will be competitive.

UW is 3.75. And I know admissions are more than just numbers but I wanted to know if an application OOS was even worth it (those things start to add up!). Thanks for the replies!

trevorlongstreet- I got in ED from out of state (New Jersey). I had your exact UW GPA 3.75. I received a 32 on the ACT, which according to their website is the top range of their 50 percentile. Definately try to get your ACT score up and then I think you’ll get in. Good luck!

My son’s waiting to hear back from W&M, along with UVA and JMU. What I would advise *anyone *is that, if you see a school you’re interested in, go ahead and apply. What’s the worst that can happen?

I wouldn’t let some of the credentials posted on CC spook me. Some of these folks are supernatural. I’ve got a master’s in engineering and an MBA, and I don’t see how some students manage what they do. If you look like you’re above the midpoint of a school’s SAT scores, have a good GPA, decent XCs, and have taken one of the more challenging curricula that your HS offers, why *wouldn’t *you be accepted?

W&M’s student body is 65% in-state residents and 35% out-of-state residents which is actually a fairly high percentage of out-of-state students for a public university. It is far from impossible for out-of-state students to be admitted but it is a more selective and competitive process because of the limited number of spaces.

My son who is OOS was just accepted with a 32 ACT, 2150 SAT score and a 3.7 GPA from a prestigious and difficult private school. He is a NMF and has very strong leadership ECs which we believe helped him in this process.
