How Much Does Prestige Actually Matter?

“Explain your comment further. Would you agree with the statement that other top public schools such as UCB, UCLA, and UVA are not on the map nationally?”

Let’s try this again. I meant to write I agree those schools are on the map nationally. My point is they are limited to an extent due to their requirement to take so many students from a defined geographic area.

I recall a murdered Hopkins senior only a couple years ago. I guess since she wasn’t the class president, it’s “fine.” I guess we should also ignore the murder of a Hopkins junior a few years ago, murdered by an intruder in his frat house.

Hey, where did you get those awesome rose-tinted glasses?

NC’s security is no better than JHU’s; that’s my point.

The irony of a tarheel (or their surrogate) bagging on another school’s security is too much.

Whoa…I heavily disagree. Chapel Hill may not be Mayberry, but it is WAY safer than Baltimore, which was rated one of the most dangerous cities in America.

coolbreeze: I don’t think anyone here is qualified enough to make a fair assessment as to the safety of each school’s campus security but the fact that you are trying to argue that Baltimore, one of the most dangerous cities in the US is safer than Chapel Hill is just ridiculous.

Why are you getting so butt-hurt and trying to argue about something that is so blatantly obvious breeze?

My only point, from personal experience, is that security on JHU’s campus is no worse than UNC’s. The blatantly obvious thing to me at JHU was they made security a very important thing to them. I’d say Baltimore and Durham run a tight race regarding danger, except Baltimore has a really nice major league baseball team.

The only “butt-hurt” that seems to be going on around here is from the likes of you and yours. Your question is built on a faulty premise.

Well, UNC isn’t in Durham, so that’s of no consequence. I’m just saying: If you’ve never been to Baltimore, you have no idea how frightening nearly the entire city seems. I was in Baltimore for about ten minutes and that was actually too long. Hahaha

Exactly-on campus. UNC’s campus is incredibly safe, and I’m sure JHU’s is as well. But who wants to be stuck on campus all the time? While Chapel Hill is a beautiful, safe college town, Baltimore is a run-down and crime stricken city, particularly in the area surrounding JHU. You can jog all around Chapel Hill without feeling threatened in the least (unless you do so at 4 am); the same can’t be said for Baltimore.

And, like Blair said, Chapel Hill is nothing like Durham.

I’ve visited JHU, and I feel pretty safe in and out of campus. There’s lights and people everywhere, so as long as you travel in groups, it’s fine.

Yeah, but why would you want to go somewhere which requires you to be with a group in order to be safe? Lol

I’ve taken walks ON campus at UNC at the oddest hours in the world and have never felt unsafe. Off campus at those hours is a different story though.
