How much does prestige of MED SCHOOL matter for Residency?

This might be answered in my thread asking bigredmed, but just in case he/she doesn't log on for a while, what would you guys say about this topic?

ive also wondered myself.....from what I've heard, some program directors only consider students from a certain list of schools....

If you have board scores above 230, I think you will get pretty strong consideration no matter where you went. That being said, it doesn't hurt to go to Harvard Med ;).

Yes this is a difficult question. I've heard conflicting answers. Some say what med school you go to is only important if you plan on entering academia. Others say it's important to see the residency matching rates. It's very confusing. I am concerned with this question especially in relation to specializations.

1.) Even if residencies care a great deal what med school you go to, your residency also is only important if you plan on entering academia. There are some other exceptions, including the ultra-competitive residencies (generally held to be four or five: Radiology, Ophthalmology, Anesthesiology, Dermatology [ROAD]).

2.) http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=202936; notice that the excerpt is discussing how residency directors pick candidates.
