How much does race factor to admission?

Definitely… Whites and Latinos would benefit the most from AA

if 77% of the California population is white… UC’s should have a 77% white population…

that would be lame…

that would be fair…

and lameeeeeeee

Kind of funny that many of the people who voted against AA were white people afraid their kids wouldn’t get in because of spots taken by Black and Hispanic students.

really?

probably, lame dude.

OOP, your method of how affirmative action should equalize the demographics of UCs to the demographics of California’s population is actually illegal by a U.S. supreme court ruling as such method would use quotas. What you can do with affirmative action is simply factor race, but not in such a way as to divide applicants into separate applicant groups or/and set a cap of acceptances to certain races. Had affirmative action been set, the demographics would still be disproportionate except you’d see a bit more blacks and Hispanics.

and less asians…
and less asians…
Correction: fewer Asians.

Why are there so many asians in the UC system? Because the asians have higher stats. It’s ridiculous to discriminate against a race just for being smart and hardworking.

Just for being born asian, one should have to work harder than blacks, latinos and whites to get into college? Ridiculous.

If this is the case, the whites, latinos and blacks should step up and work as hard as the asians to get into college.

"AFFIRMITIVE ACTION NEEDS TO OCCUR: Equal opportunity for race… "

Funniest and the most ignorant post of the century, lmao

What I heard about AA once was that if it went into effect there will be the following criteria for it in public schools

-There will need to be a certain “quota” for each ethnicity (i.e. 30% Asian, 30% White, 20% Latino, 15% Black, Remaining 5% Native Americans, OOS, INT)

-People within an ethnicity would be competing with their fellow ethnic-people.
That is if you’re Hispanic then u compete Vs. other hispanics.

Haiku, all those claims are false. The Supreme Court ruled in University of California Regents vs. Bakke that racial quotas cannot be set nor can applicants be divided into certain groups by race in which each group is under different admissions and conditions. However, it also concluded affirmative action is legal in the sense that race could be a factor in admissions, albeit not too much.

Whatever… I can see the point that if Asians have higher stats they should be accepted, but at the same time if 77% of the UC system is being funded by the mandatory taxes of whites, why shouldn’t there be an equal percentage accepted into the UC’s… It doesnt really matter because slowly but surely the asian population in the UC system will decrease due to the efforts of the UC system to make the demographics more fair.

What if China had demographics of 92% asian and 8% white… Yet China’s PUBLIC Universities were 60% white, and 21 % asian… Would this be fair?? Obviously not because its not a representation of China’s demographics…

^^ an excellent point

But then should rich applicants be given preference because their parents have paid more taxes? Or should OOS applicants be given preference because their OOS tuition is more than the state’s per student contribution? Just trying to understand the logical extensions of your argument, Oop.

Yeah, but according to that argument, Oop, only rich people should be accepted into public universities because they pay the most tax.

As a side note, an Asian household in California pays, on average, more tax than any other ethnicity (including White).

Center for Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity, Stanford University, 2000

No I wouldn’t base it on individual households, its just a matter of principle… 77% of the population is white, thus roughly 77% of the taxes being payed are from white households. Thus 77% of the UC system is funded by whites.

All the white applicants should compete with eachother to make it into that 77% of a UC… All the asian applicants should compete with eachother to make it into their 12% of a UC…

What you are proposing is a strict quota system based on race.

Generally, universities aspire to be meritocracies, admitting the applicants who demonstrate the greatest achievement and promise. Currently, the UCs try to assess achievement and promise within the context of the opportunities the applicants have had. Doing this fairly is difficult… the devil is in the details and all that.

Speaking of details… how would you verify an applicant’s race? What if they’re of mixed heritage?
