How much does Race Play?

How about middle easterns? Specifically Iranian?

Is that any good at all? I figure they'll either not know what it is or know what it is and think it's bad.

How are my chances?

Race matters a lot. College admissions works on quotas. They have to fill quotas of different races. Thus, its much easier to get in if your Native American, Black, Hispanic, or Multi-racial, than if your white or Asian American. However, being Middle Eastern is definitely in my opinion a PLUS POINT. It will help you. Not many Iranians apply to schools here. They are a small minority. Being Iranian brings diversity to college campuses---diversity they want. :) My great-grandmother is Iranian.

Who wouldn't know what Iranian is? With all the fuss in Iraq (I do know that Iranians are from Iran) and the middle east generally?

It's a plus.

I don't think it's as direct as filling quotas, as glycerine19 said, but colleges DO accept a variety of people from different races in order to maintain a 'diverse' environment.

Especially if you write your college essay on a "hot-button issue" like middle easterners getting discriminated against because people assume they are terrorists. colleges will really like that because they will think you will bring great discussion and insight on your culture to campus.

what is iranian even considered? I know european is no big deal, african is the same as black, asian is a negative, but iran?

I think it'd just be considered other, although I'm not 100% positive.

I think it's either considered white or Asian. Which was why I was thinking it would suck because those are the the two worst races for college.

What should I talk about in my essay? And how would I bring it up? I thought it would be best to talk about doing community service at the hospital, do I incorporate being Iranian and people discriminating me into that.

Technically, Iranians are persians, right? I don't know if persian is underrepresented or not...

write your essay in a way that will best describe who you are. don't try to "play" the admissions people.

Race matters a lot if you are black, hispanic or native american when it helps a bunch. It matters if you're Asian where it hurts a bunch.

honestly, being asian sucks

would it hurt not to put your race down at all?

im iranian and japanese.. my asian counterpart hurts lol

would I write down Other: Indian, instead of Asian?

isn't iran in asia?

that would mean ASIAN

Actually, Iran is in the Middle East. India is technically in Asia, but its a sub-continent.

So, my question was, writing Other: Indian instead of Asian down would be better?

no not really because there are tons of indians at good schools

I'd assume this:

Negative: all Whites, all Asians (*argg), probably Indians too.
Neutral: Europeans (although they're satisfied with their own education system), Northern Africa, Middle Eastern
Positive: Af. American, Hispanics, Nat. Americans, and every other race that's been persecuted throughout history like the Jews.

DEFINITELY Indians.

I would include Pacific Islanders and Southeast Asians in this category, if not under the Positive label.

Definitely NOT the Jews.
