How much does religion matter at Notre Dame ?

I was looking over the admission statistics and realised an overwhelming percentage of people are Catholic (like 83% overall and 42% attended Catholic Schools)

<a href="https://admissions.nd.edu/firstyear/statistics.cfm%5B/url%5D">https://admissions.nd.edu/firstyear/statistics.cfm</a></p>

So is religion a factor in admission at Notre Dame and how tolerant are the students and faculty (of a Hindu. I looked at the Featured Discussion thread, but wanted some somewhat fresh perspective as it was like 2 years ago).

Are people gonna be like "OMG!!!! He's a Hindu. Teh power of Christttt compellls theee" or whatever.

You have quite a bent impression of Catholic people. Maybe you need to be a bit more tolerant as well.

I'm quite tolerant actually, except I really can't take it if someone tries to convert me (although I'm not religious).

BTW, the quote was light hearted, sorry if it offended anyone. But the question still remains. Is religion a factor in admissions and are the students and faculty quite tolerant ?

no one at ND will impose their religion on you. I'm sure the faculty is tolerant.. I think they have to be. As far as students.. you never know. Personally, I have no problem if a non-Catholic attends ND. It's not going to affect me in any negative way. But, like any school, i'm sure you'll run into some crazy Catholics.

You may not know, but I do. I'd be willing to vouch for almost every student at ND that they won't care. This place offers opportunities for Christianity. It does not compel Catholicism. We may have a large percentage of Catholics, but we are very much a world university. Please don't confuse us with dark age institutions like Bob Jones or Pensacola Christian. No one's going to attack your religion. There's a lot of respect here. I might ask the Muslim down the hall to post his point of view here later. Oh and that was a pretty funny joke btw.

Ok Thanks. I read on College Board that one of the factors considered in the admissions process is religious affiliation or commitment are considered. Do they mean commitment towards Catholicism or commitment towards ones beliefs.

Considered:

*** Religious Affiliation or Commitment**
* Work Experience
* First generation college student
* Level of Applicant's Interest

Not quite funny. I feel that that is a common stereotype attached to devout Catholics. I do not have any problem with people that are not Catholic at ND. I do not force my religion upon anyone - my roommate is an atheist but respects my beliefs that he attended Palm Sunday Mass with me and my friend just to see what played such a major role in my life. I really appreciated that. In fact, I appreciate tolerance and mutual learning. Just as in any other institution or location, you have to respect other people's beliefs if you expect yours to be respected as well.

red, Trust me I wasn't stereotyping or anything. As I mentioned I'm very tolerant myself. My sincerest apologies if it offended you.

there have been so many threads on this topic
