How much does research experience help?

I'm going to get about 150+ hours of research done in Colorado State, but the thing is, the research (plant genetics) has nothing to do with my possible majors (computer science/economics/history) and doesn't fit in with my other ECs. Will it still help?

It'll help, but not as much as someone who would go into the field of biology.

The biology student could use the research to show passion as well as achievement.

i think it will -- that looks like a lot of hours and research exp is always a plus -- for someone just applying to college it is not strictly required that you keep true to your proposed major and don't explore any other possibilities -- besides, biology, and especially genetics, can be combined with computer science into bioinformatics, for example, so it is not like this research experience is totally not relevant to your possible majors

it wont really help unless you have awards to show for it. if not, itll just count as a large ec.

Not to side-track from the OP's question, but what if you have a sci fair project that's been to state, and have no researcher's help? How do you indicate that you didn't use someone else's idea?

bobbobbob, you mentioned awards to show for it... but for a high school student, isnt publication a more realstic way of showing committment and achievement?

How do you indicate that you didn't use someone else's idea?

It will definitely help.

bing: sure. publication is one form of recognition.

As in publication do you mean recognized in a newspaper or something?

I think he means publish a research paper.

Coolness! What types of publishing companies would publish this stuff? Names please!

how would it help? Research is boring, college admissions want to see something exciting!

Ishkabob, research papers are published by journals (like for example the American Journal of Bioengineering, Autonomous Robots Journal).

Publishing a research paper isn't something you can do over a summer break.
