I have this book right now and have been reading it. It's actually a very fun book to read, but I'm kinda skeptical about how much it will help. I was wondering how frequently do the words in this book appear on the SAT?

This book is an updated version of Direct Hits Volume 1 & 2. DH 1 & 2 was very accurate for the SAT sentence completion questions and I think at one point it had 12 questions right out of 19. While vocabulary is tested on the SAT, do not spend so much time memorizing list of words. It’s only 19 questions and just studying the most common words will enable you to get at least of of those questions right. If you have time then do whatever you want but if you’re taking it this October, time would be better spent on math problems, grammar rules, etc…

Thanks for the help. 12 out of 19 is actually quite impressive. Since I already know most of the words in the book, I will try to skim through most of the insider info and read carefully only the words I do not know.

The Essential 500 is way more than just a Direct Hits update; it has new words, a much higher hitrate, and chapters on sentence completions and critical reading

Always. They are Always there.

All the words on my June Sunday 2013 SAT were in his book - it puts Barron’s, Princeton, and even Direct Hits to shame.

Thanks for all the info, I’m starting to feel really confident now because sentence completion is the part where I lose the most points. Feeling really good now :D

To the OP - You should feel confident! Just read through all those words and you’ll do great

weird how all of your posts are about how great The Insider’s Complete Guide is.

are you the author (Larry Krieger) or do you just work for him?

@Lipp7260

LOL - I just think its a really good book. I used to get an 800 CR twice (2400 2nd time)

Why do I have a feeling that avitron142 is an advertiser. Read all his posts and go figure.

@TommyD36

Yeah… After Lipp’s post, I’m starting to feel wary about all the posts that say “This book is absolutely perfect.” However, I can’t seem to find a single post that says, “This book ain’t got ****”, so that’s a plus.

yeah, avitron142 and vinceyoung10 - just trying to sell their product. – actually, thinking about it now, maybe both accounts belong to one guy (they often post on the same thread and back each other up).

–

but to answer your question, im sure the insider’s complete guide won’t hurt, but I’d personally be spending my study time elsewhere (unless vocab is clearly a weakpoint of yours).

oh, and let’s add

to the list too.

Astroturfers.

@Lipp7260

Yep, pretty suspicious. The book isn’t bad though, and CR in general is my weakest point, so I guess it is fine.

I just bought Direct Hits 1 & 2 and the Essential 500. Doesn’t hurt to study extra vocab.

The Essential 500 Words does not suffice by itself. It should be used in conjunction with other relevant vocabulary books, useful methods, & analytical common sense. Regarding analytical common sense, some vocabulary on the SAT can be broken down into basic parts & understood together as a whole without previously knowing the definition of the word. Also, the Essential 500 Words has sections on reading passages that should be utilized.
