How much does volunteer work really help you?

I don't have the best GPA, around a 2.8. I have 312 volunteer hours, and I plan on getting 500 by the time I apply to colleges (I'm currently a junior). I'm not applying to crazy hard places like UVA, etc. Probably places like Quinnipiac and Colorado @ Boulder. How much will those volunteer hours help me when I apply? Keep in mind I have other things on my resume such as working at a local country club over the summer, 4 years track/cross country, and some other stuff.
Thanks!!!

I think it depends on the school, but with the amount of hours you have I think you’ve definitely exceeded the average. I don’t know anyone with more than 100 hours.

If what you are really asking is will my commitment to volunteer work and logging an impressive amount of hours make up for a GPA that is out of range for CU and Quin?

I’d say “no”. GPA is probably the most important component of your application, followed by test scores, so you probably have an uphill battle for those two schools. How do your test scores look?

I’ve just finished 1st quarter junior year and have not taken any of the tests yet. I do take somewhat difficult classes though.
Freshman year
Honors Geometry, Hon English, Hon Biology, Hon US history, Spanish 2, Gym, Foundations of technology.
Sophomore year
Algebra 2, Hon English, Hon Chemistry, Hon Government, Hon spanish 3, Banking&Credit/ Health (semester classes) and concert orchestra
Junior year
Precalc, Hon English, Hon Physics, Hon Modern World History, Hon spanish 4, AP Psychology, and college prep.

My weighted GPA is around a 3.25 if that makes any difference.

Oh, and I go to a public school in Maryland. Also I will be majoring in psychology if that makes any difference.
